Flonase Information

Flonase (fluticasone propionate) is an over-the-counter (OTC) corticosteroid nasal spray used to treat and prevent the nasal and ocular symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever. Its active ingredient, fluticasone propionate, is a potent synthetic corticosteroid that works by targeting the inflammatory response in the nasal passages. Unlike antihistamines that only block histamine, fluticasone works by inhibiting multiple cell types and inflammatory mediators, including histamine, prostaglandins, and leukotrienes, all of which are involved in allergic reactions.

Flonase is highly effective because it acts directly at the site of the allergic reaction—the nasal passages. When sprayed into the nose, the medication is absorbed by the nasal mucosa, where it reduces inflammation and swelling. This action helps to alleviate a wide range of allergy symptoms, including sneezing, a runny nose, nasal itching, and nasal congestion. Additionally, Flonase is also indicated for the relief of associated eye symptoms, such as itchy and watery eyes.

For optimal effectiveness, Flonase must be used consistently and regularly. Its full therapeutic benefit is not immediate. At the same time, some individuals may experience relief within 12 to 24 hours. However, it can take several days of consistent use to achieve maximum symptom relief. Therefore, it is often recommended to start using the spray a few days before the expected onset of allergy season. Flonase Side Effects

The side effects of Flonase are generally localized and mild due to its low systemic absorption. The most common side effects include a mild burning or stinging sensation in the nose, nosebleeds (epistaxis), and an unpleasant taste or smell. Some users may also experience headaches, coughs, or sore throats. Although rare, more serious side effects can occur, particularly with prolonged use or improper application. You should stop using the medication and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:

• Local Nasal Effects: Prolonged use of nasal corticosteroids can, in rare cases, lead to damage to the nasal septum, resulting in a perforation (a hole in the wall separating the nostrils) or nasal ulcers. Signs of this may include a whistling sound when breathing through the nose.

• Adrenal Suppression: While extremely rare with a nasal spray, high doses or long-term use can lead to the suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. This can affect the body's ability to produce its own steroids and may result in symptoms such as extreme fatigue, weakness, nausea, or low blood pressure.

• Fungal Infections: Because it suppresses the local immune response, Flonase may increase the risk of localized infections. The development of a fungal infection (Candida) in the nose or throat is a possibility, which may appear as white patches.

• Eye-related Side Effects: Long-term use of corticosteroids has been linked to an increased risk of cataracts and glaucoma. Symptoms such as a change in vision, blurred vision, or eye pain should be reported to a healthcare professional.

• Severe Allergic Reaction: Though rare, a severe allergic reaction to the product itself is possible. Signs may include a widespread rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and difficulty breathing.

Flonase Precautions

Before using Flonase, it is essential to inform your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, including any allergies, existing infections, or recent nasal surgery or trauma. You should not use Flonase if you have a known hypersensitivity to fluticasone propionate or any of its inactive ingredients. Flonase should be used with caution in patients with untreated infections, including active or latent tuberculosis, as it can worsen or mask the symptoms of these conditions.

Flonase is for nasal use only. It is crucial to avoid spraying the medication into your eyes or mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse the area thoroughly with water. Suppose you have recently had nasal surgery, a nasal injury, or nasal ulcers. In that case, you should not use Flonase until healing is complete, as corticosteroids can impair wound healing. It is also important to shake the bottle well before each use to ensure the medication is mixed correctly and dosed.

For children, it is essential to follow the age restrictions and dosing instructions on the product label. Flonase should not be used in children younger than 4 years of age, and should not be used for more than two months per year unless directed by a doctor. Long-term use of corticosteroids in children can potentially affect their growth rate. If you are concerned about your child's growth, discuss it with their doctor.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor before using Flonase. While systemic absorption is low, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It is also unknown whether Flonase is excreted in human milk. Therefore, its use should only be considered if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks. Always use the medication as directed and for the shortest duration necessary to control symptoms.
