Frontline Information

Frontline (Fipronil) is used to protect dogs and cats from fleas, ticks, and other external parasites. It helps kill adult fleas and prevent new ones from developing for up to 30 days. It also protects against ticks, including species like the brown dog tick and deer tick, and eliminates chewing lice. Frontline may also be used to control sarcoptic mange in dogs. Phenylpyrazoles like Fipronil work by targeting the nervous system of insects and ticks. It blocks specific nerve signals called GABA and glutamate channels, causing the parasite’s nerves to overfire and leading to paralysis and death.

Frontline Side Effects

The most common side effects of Frontline may include mild skin irritation, temporary hair loss, and drooling (if your pet licks the application site). Call your veterinarian right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Signs of neurotoxicity, such as tremors, vomiting, or seizures

Frontline Precautions

Do not administer Frontline if your pet is allergic to Fipronil or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start administering this medication, tell your veterinarian about your pet’s medical history, including if it has a liver impairment, skin condition, is pregnant or breastfeeding, or lactating. Tell your veterinarian about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Frontline and other medications, such as other topical medications containing organophosphates, pyrethroids, antifungals, or corticosteroids. Do not use Frontline if your pet is pregnant, breeding, or lactating. It is unknown if Frontline is safe for use in pregnant, breeding, or lactating animals. Always consult your veterinarian before using this medicine on animals.

Use this medicine exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Frontline comes as a topical solution. Apply it directly to your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades, where they can’t lick it. It spreads through the skin’s natural oils and protects for about a month. Avoid bathing or swimming for 24 hours after application so the product can fully absorb. Use the correct version for your pet. Never use dog products on cats. Wear gloves when applying the product. Wash your hands thoroughly afterward. Keep children and other pets away from the treated animal until the site is dry (about 24 hours). Do not sleep with or cuddle pets immediately after application. Store Frontline at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
