Fucidin Information
Fucidin (fusidic acid topical) is an antibiotic medication applied to the skin. It is primarily used to treat bacterial skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species. This includes conditions such as impetigo (a highly contagious skin infection), folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), boils (furuncles), carbuncles, and infected wounds or cuts. Fusidic acid works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which is essential for bacterial growth and replication. By stopping bacteria from making the proteins they need, Fucidin prevents the infection from spreading and helps the body's immune system clear the existing bacteria, leading to the resolution of the skin infection.
Fucidin Side Effects
The most common side effects of Fucidin may include mild irritation, itching, burning, dryness, or stinging at the application site. These local skin reactions are usually mild and temporary. Other possible side effects include skin rash and redness. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Allergic reactions (e.g., severe rash, hives, severe itching, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing);
• Exacerbation of eczema (worsening of existing eczema);
• Significant worsening or spread of the infection despite treatment.
Fucidin Precautions
Do not use Fucidin if you are allergic to fusidic acid, any other fusidic acid derivatives, or any of its ingredients. Before starting to use this medication, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have a fungal or viral skin infection, as Fucidin is an antibiotic that will not treat these types of infections. Also, inform your doctor if you have any other allergies. Avoid applying Fucidin in or near the eyes, as it may irritate. If contact occurs, rinse the affected area immediately with water. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There are generally no significant systemic drug interactions with topical fusidic acid due to minimal systemic absorption. However, always inform your doctor about all topical products you are using, especially if they are applied to the same area of skin. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using Fucidin. The safety of topical fusidic acid during pregnancy has not been fully established. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks to the fetus. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before using Fucidin. It is unknown if topical fusidic acid passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Avoid applying Fucidin to the breast area if breastfeeding. The safety and effectiveness of Fucidin in pediatric patients (infants and young children) have been established for certain formulations, but always follow your doctor's specific instructions for use in children.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Fucidin comes as a cream or ointment. Wash and gently dry the affected area of skin before applying. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected skin, typically two to three times daily, as directed by your doctor. Rub it in gently and thoroughly. You may cover the treated area with a light dressing, as advised by your doctor, especially in cases such as impetigo, to prevent the spread of the infection. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve quickly. Stopping early can lead to the infection returning or developing antibiotic resistance. The typical treatment duration is 7 to 14 days, but this can vary. If there is no improvement after a few days or if the infection worsens, contact your doctor. Store Fucidin at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
