Galexos Information
Galexos (Simeprevir) is used to treat hepatitis C infection in adults with compensated liver disease who have not been previously treated or who have failed prior treatment. It is typically used in combination with other antiviral medications such as peginterferon alfa and ribavirin or with sofosbuvir to increase the chances of achieving a cure. It is also used specifically for genotype 1 and 4 variants of hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a severe viral infection that can lead to significant liver damage, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. The active ingredient, simeprevir, belongs to the class of direct-acting antivirals (DAAS) and more specifically, the protease inhibitor class. Simeprevir works by blocking the viral NS3/4A protease enzyme, which the hepatitis C virus needs to process viral proteins and complete its life cycle. This enzyme inhibition stops the virus from multiplying in liver cells, thereby reducing the viral load. It also gives the immune system a better chance to clear the infection. Studies show that simeprevir significantly increases the likelihood of achieving a sustained virologic response (SVR), which means the virus becomes undetectable in the blood about 12 weeks after treatment.

Ensure you know your hepatitis B status before taking this medication, as this antiviral drug can increase the activity of Hepatitis B virus, leading to liver damage and death. Check with your doctor regularly while taking this medication, as you may need to do blood tests to check your liver function. Hepatitis C can be passed to other individuals through contact with infected blood, even while taking this medication. Talk with your healthcare provider about ways to prevent spreading the hepatitis C virus. Do not use this medication during pregnancy, and also avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication. Inform your doctor if you intend to get pregnant. You must use an effective form of birth control while taking this antiviral medication and also for 6 months after stopping it. Tell your doctor about all the medications, including herbal supplements, you are taking before using Galexos to minimize the risk of interactions.
Take one 150 mg capsule of Galexos daily with food, as directed by your doctor or as stated in the medication pack. It is crucial to swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew it. The total treatment duration varies, with regimens often lasting 12 to 24 weeks, depending on your doctor’s discretion. Your doctor will adjust your treatment plan depending on your Hepatitis C genotype, prior treatment history, and liver condition.
