Galvus Information

Galvus (Vildagliptin) is used alone or with other medications to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is typically used when exercise and dietary modifications alone cannot control blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition in which the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or can't effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is essential for regulating blood sugar by allowing glucose to enter cells for energy. In type 2 diabetes, impaired insulin function leads to elevated blood glucose levels. The active ingredient in Galvus is vildagliptin, a member of the class of drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors). It works in the body by blocking the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), which usually breaks down incretin hormones. Incretins are released during meals and play a key role in regulating blood glucose by stimulating insulin release and suppressing glucagon production, but only when blood sugar is elevated. By blocking the action of the DPP-4 enzyme, vildagliptin enables these beneficial incretin hormones to remain active for a more extended period. This prolonged action helps the pancreas release more insulin in response to an increase in glucose and also reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver. It ultimately leads to better control of blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Galvus Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to vildagliptin or any other ingredients in Galvus. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Diabetic emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis;
• Heart disease;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Pancreas diseases;
• Type-1 diabetes

Ensure follow-up visits with your doctor while using this medication, as your doctor may need to periodically check your liver function to monitor for potential adverse effects. If you feel dizzy while taking Galvus, do not drive or operate machinery. Ensure you check your blood sugar regularly to ensure that your diabetes is being controlled. Do not drink alcohol, as it can affect the control of your blood sugar. While vildagliptin rarely causes low blood sugar, it is essential to be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar, such as anxiety, sweating, paleness, hunger, and a pounding heart. Consult your doctor immediately if you feel these symptoms. This medication is not recommended for use in individuals under 18 years of age. Consult your doctor before using this medicine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Vildagliptin may interact with other medications or substances, such as thiazides or other diuretics, corticosteroids, and thyroid medicine. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter medications, that you are taking before starting Galvus to prevent potential drug interactions. Take Galvus tablets orally once or twice daily, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. The usual dose is 50 mg once or twice daily. Your doctor will determine and adjust your dose based on your condition and any other medications you are taking. It's vital to take Galvus regularly at the same time each day for consistent blood sugar control and not to stop taking it suddenly without consulting your doctor. Store it in a cool, dry place, and keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
