Gaviscon Information

Gaviscon (Aluminum hydroxide and Magnesium carbonate) is an oral combination product used as antacid for temporary relief of symptoms associated with gastric acidity. This medication is used to relieve heartburn; acid indigestion; sour stomach and upset stomach associated with these symptoms. It works by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach. Gaviscon is available as tablets and oral liquid.

Gaviscon Side Effects

The side effects of Gaviscon are rare and may include abdominal pain; diarrhea; loss of appetite; nausea; constipation; burping and vomiting. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Headache;
• Increased thirst or urination;
• Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting;
• Mental or mood changes (such as confusion);
• Signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine);
• Unusual weight loss, bone or muscle pain;
• Unusual weakness or tiredness.

Gaviscon Precautions

Do not use Gaviscon if you are allergic to Aluminum hydroxide and Magnesium carbonate or to any other ingredients in this medication or if you have kidney disease. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have kidney problems; are dehydrated; have pre-existing decreased bowel motility; are on a sodium-restricted diet or a magnesium-restricted diet; are taking a prescription drug. Antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. When using this product, laxative effect may occur. Do not use the maximum dosage for than 2 weeks. Do not drink alcohol while taking Gaviscon. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using this medication.
