Gluconorm (Repaglinide) Information
Gluconorm, which contains the active ingredient repaglinide, is an oral antidiabetic medication used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It helps control blood sugar, especially after meals. Gluconorm is used when diet and exercise alone are not enough and may be taken alone or with other diabetes medicines, such as metformin. It is taken by mouth shortly before meals so that the dose can match your eating schedule.
The mechanism of action of repaglinide involves stimulating the pancreas to release insulin when you eat. It blocks certain potassium channels in the pancreas, which triggers insulin release. Because it works quickly and doesn’t last long, it helps control mealtime blood sugar without causing prolonged high insulin levels. This also lowers the risk of long-lasting low blood sugar compared with longer-acting medicines.
Gluconorm Side Effects
Gluconorm is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Commonly reported effects include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), headache, dizziness, mild nausea, and upper respiratory symptoms such as a runny nose or sore throat. Some individuals may also experience stomach discomfort, joint pain, or fatigue.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop the medication and seek urgent care if any of the following symptoms appear:
• Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
• Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash
• Severe hypoglycemia, including confusion, shakiness, sweating, and fainting
• Signs of liver problems, including yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, and severe abdominal pain
Gluconorm Precautions
Do not use Gluconorm if you are allergic to repaglinide or any ingredient in the medicine. It is not suitable for people with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or severe liver disease. Tell your doctor your complete medical history before starting. People with liver problems, adrenal or pituitary disorders, or frequent low blood sugar may need careful dose adjustments and monitoring.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Gluconorm may interact with many medicines, including gemfibrozil, clarithromycin, azole antifungals, beta-blockers, and other antidiabetic drugs. Some interactions can significantly increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Alcohol may also increase this risk and should be used cautiously.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Repaglinide is generally avoided in pregnancy and when breastfeeding unless clearly needed, and alternative treatments are often preferred. Discuss potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
Take Gluconorm exactly as prescribed. It is usually taken 2–4 times daily, right before meals (typically 15 minutes prior, but anywhere from immediately before to 30 minutes before food is acceptable). If you skip a meal, skip that dose. Do not take extra doses to make up for missed meals. Taking it consistently with meals helps keep blood sugar stable and reduces the risk of low blood sugar. Do not stop taking Gluconorm without consulting your doctor. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light, and keep them out of reach of children.
