Glumetza (Metformin extended release) Information
Glumetza, which contains the active ingredient metformin, is an oral extended-release medication used to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It helps lower blood glucose levels by improving the body’s response to insulin and reducing the amount of sugar produced by the liver. Glumetza provides steady blood sugar control over 24 hours. It is often prescribed when diet and exercise alone are not enough or if regular metformin causes stomach problems.
The mechanism of action of metformin involves lowering hepatic glucose production, helping muscle and fat tissues use insulin more effectively, and reducing postprandial glucose absorption. This combination helps control blood sugar after meals and overnight. Because it does not make the body release extra insulin, the risk of low blood sugar is low when Glumetza is taken alone. The extended-release formula slowly releases the medicine in the stomach and intestines, making it easier on the stomach and keeping blood sugar steady throughout the day.
Glumetza Side Effects
Glumetza is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Commonly reported effects include nausea, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, bloating, gas, and a metallic taste. These digestive symptoms are usually mild and tend to improve as the body adjusts to treatment. Compared with immediate-release metformin, Glumetza is often associated with fewer gastrointestinal side effects.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, rash
• Signs of low blood sugar such as shakiness, sweating, confusion, and a rapid heartbeat. This side effect is rare unless combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
• Symptoms of lactic acidosis, including unusual tiredness, muscle pain, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, or slow or irregular heartbeat
• Worsening kidney problems, including decreased urination, swelling, or unexpected fatigue
Glumetza Precautions
Do not use Glumetza if you are allergic to metformin or any component of the formulation. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history. People with kidney disease, liver problems, heart failure, severe infections, dehydration, or conditions that reduce oxygen supply may require careful monitoring or may not be suitable candidates for metformin therapy. Your doctor may perform regular kidney function tests to ensure safe use.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Glumetza can interact with diuretics, steroids, blood pressure medications, contrast dyes used in imaging studies, and other diabetes medications. Avoid alcohol, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Metformin may be used during pregnancy when necessary, but your doctor will make this decision. Metformin passes into breast milk in small amounts. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this medicine when breastfeeding with your doctor.
Take Glumetza exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with the evening meal. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or split it, as this can interfere with the extended-release system. You may notice the empty tablet shell in your stool. This is normal. Take the medication at the same time each day to maintain steady blood levels. Long-term use of metformin can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Your doctor may recommend periodic blood tests to monitor your B12 levels, especially if you experience symptoms like fatigue or numbness and tingling. Do not stop Glumetza without consulting your doctor, as blood sugar levels may rise. Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light, and keep out of reach of children.
