Hema-Fer (Iron supplement) Information
Hema-Fer is an oral iron supplement primarily used for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. It is commonly used in adults, children, and infants. It is a frequent choice for pregnant women who require extra iron to support fetal development and maternal blood volume.
The mechanism of action involves providing a source of iron that is absorbed in the small intestine via an active transport mechanism. Once absorbed, the iron is used by the bone marrow to produce new red blood cells or is stored in the liver as ferritin. By restoring iron levels, the medication reverses the symptoms of anemia, such as fatigue, paleness, and irritability.
Hema-Fer Side Effects
Hema-Fer is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and stool discoloration. Black stools are expected and harmless with iron supplements. Liquid formulations may also temporarily stain teeth.
More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Bloody or tarry stools
• Persistent vomiting
• Severe stomach pain
• Signs of severe allergic reaction, including hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing
Hema-Fer Precautions
Do not use Hema-Fer if you have a known allergy to iron supplements or any inactive ingredient in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have any iron overload syndromes (such as hemochromatosis) or anemias not caused by iron deficiency, like hemolytic anemia or thalassemia. Inform your doctor if you have a history of stomach ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, or if you receive frequent blood transfusions.
Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Hema-Fer has drug interactions with antibiotics like tetracyclines or fluoroquinolones, bisphosphonates, levothyroxine, and antacids.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Hema-Fer is usually considered safe during pregnancy for treating or preventing anemia. It is vital for both the mother’s health and the baby’s development. You can safely take Hema-Fer while breastfeeding. While iron is a natural part of breast milk, taking a supplement does not significantly change the iron levels in the milk or cause side effects in the nursing infant.
Use Hema-Fer exactly as your doctor tells you. For optimal absorption, Hema-Fer is best taken on an empty stomach, ideally 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. However, if the medication causes significant stomach upset, it can be taken with a small amount of food. If you are using the liquid drops, they can be mixed with fruit or vegetable juices to improve taste and reduce teeth staining. Always complete the full course of treatment as directed by your doctor, which often lasts 3 to 6 months to ensure iron stores are fully replenished. Store away from moisture and direct sunlight. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products can lead to fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep out of reach of children.
