Hylo Eye Care (Sodium Hyaluronate/Dexpanthenol)Information
Hylo Eye Care, often branded as HYLO CARE®, is an over-the-counter (OTC) lubricating solution containing the dual active ingredients 0.1% sodium hyaluronate and 2% dexpanthenol (pro-vitamin B5). It is indicated for the intensive and lasting lubrication of the ocular surface and to aid in the healing of a damaged cornea or conjunctiva, particularly after eye surgery or due to more severe chronic dry eyes. The drops are typically applied three times daily, though they can be used as often as needed. Hylo products are unique for their preservative- and phosphate-free formulation, delivered via a specialized multi-dose bottle system (COMOD®) that keeps the contents sterile for 6 months after opening.
The mechanism of action for Hylo Eye Care is twofold: lubrication and regeneration support.
• Dexpanthenol: This ingredient is a derivative of vitamin B5. It is converted to pantothenic acid upon contact with the eye. This agent is known for its regenerative properties; it increases the tissue's water-binding capacity and promotes the healing of damaged corneal and conjunctival cells, making it ideal for eyes that have undergone surgery or suffered surface erosions due to severe dryness. This combination provides both immediate relief and active care for the eye surface.
• Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid): This is a natural substance with exceptional water-binding properties. It acts as a highly viscous polymer that forms a stable, long-lasting protective film over the cornea and conjunctiva, effectively mimicking natural tears and reducing friction without causing significant or prolonged blurred vision.
Hylo Eye Care Side Effects
As a preservative-free ocular lubricant consisting of naturally occurring substances, Hylo Eye Care is generally very well tolerated. Common side effects are rare, mild, and usually temporary, including slight, transient stinging, burning, or mild irritation upon initial application. Other infrequent, minor effects may include temporary blurred vision, which is quickly resolved as the drops spread across the eye surface.
However, more serious side effects are infrequent. Suppose any of the following symptoms are experienced. In that case, the patient should stop using the drops immediately and consult an eye care professional:
• Allergic Hypersensitivity: Sporadic cases of allergic reactions have been reported, characterized by persistent or excessive tearing, marked redness, or severe eyelid or facial inflammation.
• Foreign Body Sensation (Worsening): A noticeable and non-clearing feeling of having sand or grit in the eye that intensifies after application.
• Headache: In sporadic, sensitive patients, the viscosity of the drops may be associated with a temporary headache.
• Persistent Ocular Symptoms: Any severe or persistent eye pain, redness, or irritation that worsens or persists for more than one week after using the drops.
Hylo Eye Care Precautions
Hylo Eye Care is for ophthalmic use only and must not be swallowed. Keep the product out of reach of children. If swallowed, immediately get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center. The specialized COMOD® dispenser system guarantees a sterile, precise drop with each application. Before first use, users should be instructed to prime the bottle by holding it upside down and pressing firmly and quickly on the base multiple times until the first drop is released. To prevent contamination, the dropper tip must not touch the eye, eyelids, or any other surface. The bottle should be closed immediately after use, and the product must be discarded six months after opening.
The product is generally compatible with contact lenses. However, to avoid potential incompatibility reactions between the drops and lens cleaning solutions, it is recommended to wait about 30 minutes after inserting contact lenses before using the drops. If you are using other eye drops, there should be a minimum 30-minute interval between applications, and Hylo Eye Care should always be administered last. Eye ointments must always be administered after Hylo Eye Care. A healthcare professional must be consulted immediately if eye pain, changes in vision, or continued redness or irritation of the eye are experienced, or if the condition worsens or persists for more than one week.
