Imodium Complete Information

Imodium Complete (Loperamide Hydrochloride/Simethicone) is an antidiarrheal agent used with other medications to treat diarrhea or increased bowel movements, especially when these are gas-related, such as bloating, cramps, and pressure. It provides symptom relief but does not treat the underlying cause. Its active ingredients are loperamide hydrochloride and simethicone. Loperamide binds to mu-opioid receptors in the gut wall, slowing contraction waves and allowing more water and electrolytes to be reabsorbed. This leads to firmer stools and fewer bowel movements. Simethicone reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the digestive tract, causing smaller bubbles to merge into larger ones that pass more easily, relieving bloating. It is critical to strictly adhere to the recommended daily dosage, as exceeding it can cause severe, life-threatening heart rhythm problems (such as QT prolongation).

Imodium Complete Side Effects

Most people have no problems with Imodium Complete, but it can still cause a few unwanted effects. Some side effects are constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, gas, nausea, tiredness, and vomiting. Call your doctor if these mild side effects do not go away or get worse.

Seek immediate medical attention if you notice serious side effects such as:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Abdominal pain;
• Abdominal swelling or persistent bloating;
• Constricted or "pin-point" pupils;
• Decreased coordination;
• Difficulty urinating;
• Muscle tension;
• An irregular or fast heartbeat, severe dizziness, or fainting.

Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Imodium Complete Precautions

Do not use this anti-motility medication if you are allergic to loperamide hydrochloride, simethicone, or any inactive ingredients in Imodium Complete. Before you use this medication, tell your doctor about all medical conditions you have or have had. This includes the following:
• Abdominal swelling, especially in individuals living with HIV;
• Constipation;
• Dehydration;
• Diarrhea caused by antibiotics.
• Diarrhea with blood in stool and fever;
• Difficulty with swallowing;
• Heart disease, especially a history of a prolonged QT interval or irregular heart rhythms;
• Inflammatory bowel disease;
• Liver disease

Stop using this medication and consult a doctor if your symptoms last more than 48 hours. Some medications can change how your body processes loperamide. Medications such as ketoconazole (an antifungal), gemfibrozil (a cholesterol-lowering drug), or ritonavir (an antiviral) can affect the liver's metabolism and clearance of loperamide. This interaction can raise the level of loperamide in your blood and may increase the risk of dangerous heart-related side effects. Tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking, including herbal products and supplements, to check if using them with Imodium Complete is safe for you.

This medication should only be used in pregnant women after careful evaluation of its risks and benefits. Over-the-counter multi-symptom products like Imodium Complete should not be given to children under 6 years of age unless specifically directed by a doctor. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women. It can enter breast milk and may cause adverse effects in a breastfed infant. Store this medication at room temperature. Protect it from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children.
