Invega (Paliperidone) Information
Invega, which contains the active ingredient paliperidone, is an atypical antipsychotic used for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 12–17 years, as well as schizoaffective disorder in adults. It helps reduce hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and severe agitation while supporting clearer thought processes and improved daily functioning. Invega is taken by mouth as an extended-release tablet. Taking this medicine once daily helps maintain steady blood levels and promotes adherence to long-term therapy.
The mechanism of action of paliperidone involves selectively blocking certain dopamine (D2) and serotonin (5-HT2A) receptors in the brain, helping restore balance to neurotransmitter systems that control mood, perception, and behavior. By reducing overactive dopamine activity, paliperidone decreases psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. Blocking serotonin receptors contributes to mood stabilization and cognitive benefits. Its extended-release formulation maintains consistent drug levels in the body, helping prevent symptom fluctuations and reducing the risk of side effects associated with peak concentrations.
Invega Side Effects
Invega is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur. Commonly reported effects include sleepiness or drowsiness, restlessness or an inner urge to move (akathisia), headache, and dizziness (especially when standing). Weight gain, increased appetite, constipation, stomach discomfort, or nausea may also occur. Some individuals may notice mild ankle swelling or slight changes in heart rhythm. Adolescents may be more prone to restlessness or weight gain during the early stages of treatment.
More serious side effects can occur, leading to significant monitoring protocols. If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention:
• Abnormal heart rhythm or palpitations
• High blood sugar or metabolic changes: excessive thirst, frequent urination, confusion
• Low blood pressure: dizziness, fainting, or collapse
• Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): high fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, sweating, rapid heartbeat
• Seizures
• Severe allergic reactions: swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, rash
• Sudden mood or behavior changes, including worsening depression or suicidal thoughts
• Tardive Dyskinesia (TD): involuntary movements of the face, lips, tongue, or limbs
Invega Precautions
Do not use Invega if you are allergic to paliperidone or any component of the tablets. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history. People with heart disease, low blood pressure, a history of stroke, seizures, diabetes, high cholesterol, liver or kidney disease, or movement disorders may require careful monitoring and dose adjustments. Your doctor may recommend periodic lab checks and monitoring of metabolic health because Invega can affect blood sugar, lipids, and weight.
Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Invega can interact with other antipsychotics, antidepressants, sedatives, blood pressure medications, and medications that affect heart rhythm. Avoid alcohol because it may increase drowsiness and impair judgment.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Use during the last trimester may affect the newborn, causing breathing difficulties, feeding problems, or muscle stiffness. If you are breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor because paliperidone passes into breast milk and may cause sedation in the infant.
Take Invega extended-release tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily with or without food. Swallow tablets whole. Do not crush, chew, or split them, as this can interfere with the extended-release mechanism. Consistent daily use at the same time supports stable blood levels and better symptom control. Do not stop taking Invega suddenly without consulting your doctor, as abrupt discontinuation may lead to symptom recurrence or withdrawal effects. Store tablets at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light, and keep them out of reach of children.
