Invokamet Information
Invokamet (Canagliflozin/Metformin) is used to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus whose blood sugar has not been controlled despite the use of either canagliflozin or metformin or other types of anti-diabetic medications. It is typically used along with healthy dietary and lifestyle modifications to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. Also, Invokamet is used to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events and the progression of kidney disease in specific adult populations with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition where the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't use insulin effectively, leading to high blood sugar levels. If left uncontrolled, high blood sugar can lead to serious health complications like heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, and blindness. Invokamet is a combination drug that contains two active ingredients: canagliflozin and metformin. Canagliflozin belongs to a class of medications called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, while metformin is a biguanide. These two active ingredients work through different mechanisms to help lower blood sugar. Canagliflozin works in the kidneys by blocking the reabsorption of glucose back into the bloodstream. It achieves this by blocking the action of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2, a protein responsible for the reabsorption of most glucose. This action leads to increased glucose excretion in the urine, thereby reducing blood glucose levels. Metformin, on the other hand, primarily works by decreasing glucose production in the liver and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin, allowing the cells to take up and utilize glucose more efficiently from the blood. By combining these two distinct mechanisms, Invokamet provides a comprehensive approach to managing type 2 diabetes.
