Iopidine (Apraclonidine) Information

Iopidine contains apraclonidine hydrochloride; it is an opthalmic solution which is applied to the eye. Apraclonidine is an alpha-adrenergic agonist. This medication is used along with other medications to treat high pressure inside the eye for a short time to help delay or prevent the need for surgery. After argon laser trabeculoplasty, argon laser iridotomy or Nd: YAG posterior capsulotomy, patients use Iopidine solution to control and prevent increases in intraocular pressure that occurs after these surgeries. This solution works by decreasing the amount of fluid in the eye which keeps the pressure inside the eye stable. Prior to the laser surgery one drop of iodine solution should be administered in the operative eye and after the surgery; another drop should be administered into the same eye. Follow the exact instructions on the prescription medicine directed by your doctor. The usual dose is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye, 3 times a day. Iopidine should be stored at 2 degrees celcius to 25 degrees celcius and it should be protected from light.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Inform your doctor if you have a medical history of blood vessel disease, high blood pressure or kidney disease. Common side effects include blurred vision, dry eyes, puffy eyelids, drowsiness and dry mouth.
