What is Jalyn (Dutasteride/Tamsulosin) Used For?

Jalyn (Dutasteride/Tamsulosin) is a combination prescription medication used exclusively for the treatment of moderate to severe symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia in adult men who have an enlarged prostate gland.

This combination medication works by targeting two different physical factors that cause urinary difficulties. One of its active ingredients, tamsulosin, blocks alpha-1 nerve receptors to rapidly relax the smooth muscles around the prostate and bladder neck. This relaxes the urinary opening within days, making it easier to pass urine without the usual symptoms like straining or a weak stream. Its other active ingredient, dutasteride, blocks the action of 5-alpha-reductase enzymes, preventing the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. Because the prostate relies on dihydrotestosterone to grow, dutasteride reduces dihydrotestosterone and, over 3 to 6 months, causes the prostate gland to shrink physically, relieving structural pressure on the urethra.

Jalyn works through these two mechanisms and effectively reduces the physical size of the prostate while also easing the muscle tension that restricts the bladder, which improves urinary flow and reduces the overall symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia more effectively than either medication used on its own. Be sure to take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. For more information on its use, check out the product monograph.

Consult your doctor if any of these side effects persist or worsen.

Serious side effects may include:
• Allergic reactions with symptoms such as breathing difficulties, body rash, itching, hives, skin blistering, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Decreased blood pressure with symptoms such as fainting, dizziness, and feeling lightheaded;
• Eye problems, specifically intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract and glaucoma surgery;

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms. Ensure you inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Warnings

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to dutasteride, tamsulosin, or any other ingredient in Jalyn. This medication is strictly contraindicated in children and women of reproductive age, especially those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin. Therefore, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant must never handle Jalyn capsules. If accidental contact occurs with a broken or leaking capsule, wash the area immediately with soap and water.

Use this medication with caution in individuals with some specific conditions such as a history of low blood pressure, scheduled cataract and glaucoma surgery, and liver problems. Before starting this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any past or current medical conditions you have.

Do not use the following medications along with Jalyn. These include:
• Hepatitis C medications such as ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir and dasabuvir;
• Ketoconazole;
• Mavorixafor

Some other medications such as erythromycin, paroxetine, or terbinafine should be used with caution concomitantly with Jalyn. Therefore, before using this medication, inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine if it is safe to use along with Jalyn.

Men taking Jalyn are strongly advised to wait at least six months after their last dose before donating blood to prevent a pregnant woman from receiving dutasteride through blood transfusion. As dutasteride is excreted in human semen, men taking Jalyn and whose female sexual partners are pregnant or could become pregnant should use condoms to minimize the risk of exposure through intercourse.

Tamsulosin can cause dizziness and light-headedness. Therefore, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how this medication affects you. Some large clinical trials involving dutasteride and other medications in its drug class showed a small but statistically significant increase in the incidence of a more aggressive prostate cancer. Discuss this risk with your doctor. As this medication can reduce total serum prostate-specific antigen concentrations by approximately 50% after 6 months, your doctor will need to establish a new post-treatment prostate-specific antigen baseline. This is because any rise in prostate-specific antigen value while on Jalyn (even if within a normal value) must be evaluated, as it could signal underlying prostate cancer. Store this medication at room temperature and keep away from children and pets.
