Lariam Information

Lariam (Mefloquine) is used to treat and prevent malaria. Lariam may be used alone or with other medications in treating malaria. It belongs to a class of drugs called Antimalarial. It works by interfering with the growth of parasites in the red blood cells of the human body. Parasites that cause malaria typically enter the body through the bite of a mosquito.

Lariam Side Effects

Common side effects of Lariam may include stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, fever, chills, and mild skin rash. Tell your doctor right away if you have any of these serious side effects;
• Dark urine;
• Loss of coordination;
• Numbness, tingling or pain in hands or feet;
• Persistent nausea or vomiting;

Lariam Precautions

Before taking Lariam, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, to quinine or quinidine; or if you have any other allergies. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have:

• Diabetes;
• Epilepsy or other seizure disorder;

Do not use Lariam (mefloquine) if you have a known hypersensitivity to mefloquine or related compounds (such as quinine and quinidine) or any of the excipients contained in the formulation. Do not use Lariam to treat malaria in children younger than 6 months without a doctor's advice. Do not take in a larger quantity or for longer than recommended. Take Lariam just after your main meal; it is well absorbed when taken with a fatty meal. Do not take halofantrine or ketoconazole for 15 weeks after your last dose of Lariam. Caution should be exercised after taking Lariam concerning activities requiring alertness and fine motor coordination such as driving, piloting aircraft, operating machinery, and deep-sea diving, as dizziness, a loss of balance, or other disorders of the central or peripheral nervous system have may occur.

• Chloroquine;
• Drugs for seizures;
• Halofantrine;
• Ketoconazole;
• Quinidine;
• Quinine, and • Tricyclic Antidepressants (such as fluoxetine, escitalopram, and others).
