Latisse (Bimatoprost Ophthalmic Solution 0.03%) Information
Latisse (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is a prescription-only treatment classified as a prostaglandin analog. It is specifically indicated to treat hypotrichosis of the eyelashes (inadequate or insufficient eyelashes) by increasing their growth, including length, thickness, and darkness. Bimatoprost was initially used as a glaucoma medication (Lumigan), where increased eyelash growth was observed as a beneficial side effect. The drops are applied topically once daily at night to the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes. The full effect of Latisse is typically seen after 16 weeks of continuous, daily use. If the medication is discontinued, eyelashes are expected to return to their previous appearance gradually.
The precise mechanism of action for Latisse is not fully known. However, research suggests that eyelash growth occurs by influencing the natural hair growth cycle. This is thought to occur by increasing the percentage of hairs in the anagen (growth) phase and prolonging its duration. By extending the time lashes spend in the active growth phase, bimatoprost allows them to grow longer, thicker, and darker than they would naturally.
Latisse Side Effects
Latisse may cause various side effects, which can be categorized as common and reversible, or less common and potentially permanent. The most frequently reported side effects (in approximately 3-4% of patients) are Eye Pruritus (eye itching) and Conjunctival Hyperemia (eye redness). Other common reactions include Ocular Irritation, Dry Eye Symptoms, and Periorbital Erythema (eyelid redness). Additionally, the medication can cause Skin Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin on the upper eyelid margin) and darkening of the eyelashes. These effects are expected to reverse over weeks to months upon discontinuation of the medication. Less common effects include unwanted hair growth on areas of the skin outside the treatment area if the solution frequently comes into contact with those surfaces.
Severe and Potentially Permanent Side Effects:
• Increased Iris Pigmentation: Latisse can cause an increase in brown pigment in the colored part of the eye (iris). This darkening is likely permanent and may not be reversible upon discontinuation.
• Intraocular Inflammation: Latisse should be used with caution in patients with active intraocular inflammation (e.g., uveitis) as the condition may be exacerbated.
• Potential for Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Effects: In patients using other prostaglandin analogs (like Lumigan) for elevated IOP, the concomitant use of Latisse may interfere with the intended IOP-lowering effect, and such patients must be closely monitored.
Latisse Precautions
Latisse is a prescription medication and must be used exactly as directed by a healthcare professional. It is only to be applied to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes; it should NOT be applied to the lower lid or directly into the eye. It is critically important to use only the supplied sterile, single-use applicators and to dispose of each applicator after one use to prevent contamination and potential eye infection. Patients should blot any excess solution that runs beyond the upper eyelid margin to minimize the risk of unwanted hair growth in other areas. The product contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, so patients must remove contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting them. If a dose is missed, the patient should simply apply the solution the next evening and NOT attempt to "catch up" by applying more than one drop per night. If use is stopped, the effects on lash growth will gradually wear off.
