Livalo (Pitavastatin) Information

Livalo, which contains the active ingredient pitavastatin, is a potent prescription medication in the "statin" class (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors). It is used to treat high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) and mixed dyslipidemia in adults and children aged 8 years or older. By lowering "bad" cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides while slightly increasing "good" cholesterol (HDL), Livalo helps reduce the long-term risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. The medication is taken by mouth as a tablet, typically once daily at any time of day, with or without food. It is uniquely metabolized compared to other statins; it does not rely heavily on the CYP3A4 liver enzyme, which often results in fewer drug-to-drug interactions than older statins like Lipitor or Zocor.

The mechanism of action involves blocking an enzyme in the liver that produces cholesterol. By inhibiting this production, Livalo decreases the amount of cholesterol circulating in the blood and encourages the liver to reabsorb and break down existing LDL cholesterol.

Livalo Side Effects

Livalo is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include muscle pain (myalgia), back pain, pain in the arms or legs, and diarrhea or constipation. More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention.

Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Blood Sugar Changes: Increased thirst or frequent urination, as statins can slightly affect glucose levels.
• Kidney Problems: A significant change in the amount of urine or swelling in the feet and ankles.
• Liver Dysfunction: Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or severe pain in the upper right stomach area.
• Severe Allergic Reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or significant difficulty breathing.
• Severe Muscle Injury (Rhabdomyolysis): Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by a fever or dark, "tea-colored" urine.

Livalo Precautions

Do not use Livalo if you have a known allergy to pitavastatin or any of the inactive ingredients in the medication. Do not use this medicine if you have active liver disease. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney disease, thyroid disorders, or if you consume large amounts of alcohol.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements (such as St. John's wort). Livalo has significant interactions with certain drugs that can increase the risk of muscle injury, including:
• Antibiotics: Certain macrolide antibiotics, such as erythromycin, can significantly increase pitavastatin levels.
• Cyclosporine: Avoid taking this with Livalo, as it can increase Livalo levels by approximately 5-fold.
• Other Cholesterol Drugs: Fibrates or niacin can increase the risk of severe muscle side effects.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Livalo must not be used during pregnancy, as it can cause serious harm to a developing fetus. If you become pregnant, stop the medication immediately and contact your doctor. It is also recommended to avoid breastfeeding while taking Livalo, as the drug may pass into breast milk.

Take Livalo exactly as your doctor tells you. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew them. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it has been more than 12 hours since your missed dose, skip it and take the next one at your regular time. Do not take two doses at once. Store the tablets at room temperature, protected from moisture and light, and keep them safely out of reach of children.
