Lopressor SR Information

Lopressor SR (metoprolol succinate) is a beta-adrenergic receptor blocker used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), and heart failure. It works by blocking the effects of epinephrine (adrenaline) on the heart and blood vessels. This results in a slower heart rate, reduced blood pressure, and decreased strain on the heart. In hypertension, lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems. In angina, it helps to reduce the frequency and severity of chest pain by decreasing the heart's need for oxygen. In heart failure, it helps to improve heart function and reduce the risk of hospitalization and death. Lopressor SR is a sustained-release formulation which releases the medication slowly over an extended period, allowing for once-daily dosing. Beta-blockers like metoprolol bind to beta-adrenergic receptors, primarily beta-1 receptors in the heart. This blocks the stimulation of these receptors by catecholamines such as adrenaline and noradrenaline, which are released during stress or physical exertion. By blocking these effects, Lopressor SR helps the heart work more efficiently.

Lopressor SR Side Effects

Common side effects of Lopressor SR may include dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, drowsiness, and slow heartbeat. These side effects are usually mild and may subside as your body adjusts to the medication. Call your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, such as:

• Blurred vision
• Chest pain or pressure
• Cold hands and feet
• Confusion or memory problems, changes in mental status
• Decreased sexual ability
• Depression
• Diarrhea
• Dry eyes
• Hair loss
• Hallucinations
• Heart failure symptoms worsening (increased shortness of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain)
• Irregular heartbeat
• Shortness of breath or wheezing
• Swelling of the ankles or feet
• Unusual tiredness or weakness
• Vomiting, nausea

Lopressor SR Precautions

Do not use Lopressor SR if you are allergic to metoprolol or other beta-blockers. Also, do not use this medication if you have certain heart conditions, such as severe bradycardia (very slow heartbeat), sick sinus syndrome or AV block (unless you have a pacemaker), severe peripheral arterial circulatory disturbances, or acute decompensated heart failure. Before taking Lopressor SR, tell your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have asthma or other lung diseases (e.g., COPD, emphysema, bronchitis), diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid problems, psoriasis, peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation), myasthenia gravis, or pheochromocytoma (a tumor on the adrenal gland). Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is not known if metoprolol passes into breast milk and could harm a nursing infant. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as Lopressor SR can interact with other medicines. These include other blood pressure medications, certain heart medications (such as digoxin, amiodarone, and diltiazem), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), verapamil, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), insulin and oral diabetes medicine, cimetidine, rifampin, epinephrine, general anaesthetics, and certain antidepressants. If you have diabetes, Lopressor SR may mask the symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), such as a rapid heartbeat. It's essential to monitor your blood sugar regularly as directed by your doctor. If you are going to have surgery, including dental surgery, tell your doctor or dentist that you are taking Lopressor SR. Do not stop taking Lopressor SR suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can worsen your condition and may lead to serious problems such as chest pain or heart attack. Your doctor will usually want to gradually decrease your dose if you need to stop taking it.

Use Lopressor SR exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken once daily. Swallow the tablet whole and do not crush, chew, or break it. You can take Lopressor SR with or without food, but it is essential to be consistent with how you take it daily. Taking it with food may improve absorption. Take Lopressor SR at the same time each day to help you remember. Your doctor may adjust your dose based on your blood pressure and how you respond to the medication. Continue to take Lopressor SR even if you feel well. It may take several weeks for the full benefits of the medication to be seen. Lopressor SR is part of a comprehensive treatment plan for hypertension, angina, or heart failure, which may also include lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and stress management. Store Lopressor SR at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medications out of the reach of children.
