Lotemax (Loteprednol etabonate) Information

Lotemax, which contains the active ingredient loteprednol etabonate, is a prescription corticosteroid used to treat eye inflammation caused by surgery or allergies. It is specifically designed as a soft steroid, meaning it is engineered to be metabolized effectively within the eye to reduce the risk of common steroid-related complications, such as increased eye pressure. The medication is available as eye drops, ointment, and gel, to be used in the eyes only.

The mechanism of action involves inhibiting the body's inflammatory response. It prevents the release of substances that cause swelling, redness, and itching, thereby soothing the eye and promoting healing after injury or after surgical procedures such as cataract removal.

Lotemax Side Effects

Lotemax is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include temporary blurred vision (especially with the ointment or gel), a burning or stinging sensation upon application, and a feeling that something is in the eye (foreign body sensation). You may also experience dry eyes or light sensitivity.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Cataract Formation: Long-term use of ocular steroids is a known risk factor for developing cataracts.
• Delayed Healing: After cataract surgery, steroids can slow the rate of eye healing.
• Increased Eye Pressure: Steroids can raise intraocular pressure (IOP), which may lead to glaucoma or damage to the optic nerve if not monitored.
• Secondary Infections: Steroids can mask or worsen fungal or viral eye infections by suppressing the immune response.
• Severe Allergic Reactions: Swelling of the face or eyelids, severe redness, or itching.

Lotemax Precautions

Do not use Lotemax if you have a known allergy to loteprednol etabonate or any of the inactive ingredients in the medication. Avoid use if you have a viral, fungal, or mycobacterial eye infection, as steroids can make these conditions much worse. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of glaucoma or high eye pressure. If you are using this medication for more than 10 days, your doctor should monitor your eye pressure regularly.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Although Lotemax is applied topically to the eye, using Lotemax alongside other steroid eye drops can further increase the risk of high eye pressure. If you are using glaucoma medications to lower eye pressure, Lotemax may make those treatments less effective.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Lotemax should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. There are no adequate, well-controlled studies in pregnant women regarding the use of Lotemax. It is not known whether loteprednol etabonate passes into breast milk in significant amounts. Exercise caution and consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.

Use Lotemax exactly as your doctor tells you. Shake the suspension (drops) bottle vigorously for several seconds before use to ensure the medicine is properly mixed. Turn the Lotemax gel bottle upside down and shake once to move the medication to the tip before use. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid, and instill the prescribed number of drops. Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface. Do not wear contact lenses while your eyes are inflamed. You should typically wait at least 15 minutes after application before reinserting lenses if your doctor has cleared you to wear them. Store at room temperature (15–25°C) in an upright position. Keep the bottle or tube tightly closed and out of reach of children.
