LovaZa Information

LovaZa (EPA and DHA) is a lipid-regulating prescription medication used as an adjunct to dietary modifications and lifestyle changes to lower very high triglycerides in adults significantly. Lovaza is typically used when dietary and lifestyle changes alone aren't enough to bring down the levels of triglyceride. High triglyceride levels have been implicated in increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, along with inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

LovaZa is essentially a purified formulation of omega-3 acid ethyl esters, derived from fish oil, and it predominantly contains two key omega-3 fatty acids: Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). The exact mechanism by which this medication works is not fully understood. However, it appears to inhibit a specific enzyme in the liver that's crucial for synthesizing triglycerides. It also increases the activity of a key enzyme (lipoprotein lipase) that helps break down triglycerides in the bloodstream, allowing them to be cleared more effectively. There's also evidence suggesting that it increases the breakdown of fatty acids in the liver through a process called beta-oxidation.

Omega-3 acid ethyl esters have been proven effective in reducing triglyceride levels and other forms of fats. However, it may also increase the levels of bad cholesterol in some individuals, which is why continued monitoring is necessary while taking this medication. While it is effective in treating high triglyceride levels, its efficacy in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases or pancreatitis has not been determined.

LovaZa Precautions

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Omega-3 acid ethyl esters, fish, or shellfish. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:
• Diabetes;
• Heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver problems;
• Pancreas problems;
• Recent trauma or surgery;
• Thyroid disorder, such as hypothyroidism

It’s essential to have regular check-ups with your doctor while taking this medication. Your doctor may occasionally order blood tests such as liver function tests and LDL cholesterol levels to monitor for any adverse effects.

Omega-3 acid ethyl esters, especially at high doses, have been found to prolong bleeding time in some studies, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding problems. While this prolonged bleeding time rarely produces any significant bleeding episodes, caution is still advised when using this medication, and monitoring for any side effects is necessary. Also, inform your doctor that you are taking this medication if you are scheduled for surgery. The increased potential for bleeding must be considered in your care.

The concurrent use of medications such as aspirin and blood thinners can further increase the risk of bleeding when using LovaZa. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal medications, that you are taking before using LovaZa to prevent potential drug interactions. Do not use this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless recommended by your doctor after careful evaluation of its benefits and risks. LovaZa is not recommended for use in children under 18.

Take LovaZa capsules orally, preferably with food, to prevent gastrointestinal side effects. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose of this medication for you depending on your condition. Do not break, open, crush, dissolve, or chew LovaZa capsules. Use this medication regularly as prescribed for optimal effectiveness. Check out the leaflets in the medication pack for more usage details. Store this medication at less than 25°C, but do not freeze. Keep away from children and pets.
