Maxidex Precautions

Do not use Maxidex if you are allergic to Dexamethasone or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have cataracts, diabetes, eye infections, glaucoma, recent eye surgery, severe nearsightedness, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Maxidex and other medications, such as other corticosteroids, ritonavir, atropine, etc. Do not use Maxidex if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is not known whether Dexamethasone will harm an unborn baby. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Do not use Maxidex while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is unknown if Dexamethasone passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children without talking to your doctor. The safety and effectiveness of Maxidex in children has not been established.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Maxidex comes as an eye ointment. To apply the eye ointment, wash your hands first. Do not touch the tube tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Place a 1/2 inch (1.5 centimeters) strip of ointment into the pouch. Gently close the eye and roll the eyeball in all directions to spread the medication. Try not to blink, and do not rub the eye. Wipe the tip of the ointment tube with a clean tissue to remove extra medication before recapping it. If you are using another kind of eye medication (for example, other drops or ointments), apply the eye drops first and wait at least 5 to 10 minutes before applying this eye ointment. Use eye drops before ointments to allow the drops to enter the eye. Wait several minutes for your vision to clear before driving or operating machinery. Use this medication
