Mezera (mesalazine) is a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis, proctitis, and proctosigmoiditis, as well as other diseases of the colon and inflammatory diseases. For the treatment of these conditions, Mezera targets the prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced by the enzymes, cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. These enzymes are over-active in individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases. Mezera works by blocking the activity of the enzymes, reducing the production of prostaglandins, which in turn decreases inflammation in the colon and the symptoms associated with several conditions. You should not use Mezera if you allergic to mesalamine, aspirin, sulfasalazine, or salicylates. As well, tell your doctor if you have ever had a blockage in your stomach or intestines, a skin condition such as eczema or dermatitis, asthma, liver disease, or kidney disease. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. Take this medication as directed. Do not use Mezera Enemas or Mezera Suppositories orally.
