Minims Phenylephrine Information

Minims Phenylephrine (Phenylephrine Hydrochloride) is used to dilate (enlarge) the pupil of the eye. It is used usually before eye examinations or before and after eye surgery. It is also used to treat eye conditions, such as uveitis or posterior synechiae. It is a directly acting sympathomimetic agent known as a mydriatic. It is instilled into the eye and works by inducing local vasoconstriction, narrowing blood vessels in the eye, thus, making the pupil bigger.

Minims Phenylephrine Side Effects

The common side effects of Minims Phenylephrine include blurred vision, brief burning or stinging of the eyes, increased sensitivity of eyes to light and swelling of the eyelid. Speak with your doctor immediately if any of these adverse side effects occur:
• Clumsiness or unsteadiness;
• Confusion or unusual behavior;
• Dryness of skin;
• Fast or irregular heartbeat;
• Fever;
• Flushing or redness of the face;
• Eye pain;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Skin rash;
• Slurred speech;
• Swollen stomach in infants;
• Thirst or unusual dryness of mouth;
• Unusual drowsiness, tiredness, or weakness.

Minims Phenylephrine Precautions

Do not use Minims Phenylephrine if you are allergic to phenylephrine hydrochloride or any other ingredients of its formulation. Before you start taking this medication, inform your doctor of your medical history especially if you have:
• Asthma;
• Aneurysm (a bulge in a blood vessel);
• Arteriosclerosis (buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in and on the artery walls);
• Brain damage (in children);
• Heart diseases (such as ischaemic heart disease, pre-existing bradycardia, partial heart block, severe coronary artery disease, heart failure, and cardiogenic shock);
• Diabetes mellitus;
• Hypertension;
• Down's syndrome;
• Narrow-angle glaucoma;
• Other eye diseases or problems;
• Kidney impairment.

Your eyes will become more sensitive to light when using Minims Phenylephrine eye drops; wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sunlight and other bright lights. , cause stinging and temporarily blurred vision; do not drive or operate hazardous machinery until vision is clear. Do not use Minims Phenylephrine during pregnancy; should be used only when needed and given by your doctor. Do not Minims Phenylephrine while wearing contact lenses; after using wait at least 15 minutes before putting in your contact lenses. Do not give to a child without medical advice. Do not use it for longer than 3 days. Inform your doctor about other medications you are using that may cause interactions with Minims Phenylephrine, such as:
• Halothane;
• Cardiac Glycosides or Quinidine;
• High blood pressure lowering drugs (such as amlodipine, furosemide, lisinopril, and others);
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others);
• Tricyclic Antidepressants (such as amitriptyline, imipramine, desipramine, nortriptyline, and others).
