Minitran Patch Information

Minitran Patch (Nitroglycerin) is used to prevent angina pectoris. This drug will not treat an angina attack that has already begun. Angina pectoris is chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. This condition is often a symptom of coronary artery disease (CAD). Symptoms of angina pectoris include pain or pressure in the chest, radiating pain to the arms, neck, or back, and unexplained fatigue. Emotional stress, physical activity, heavy meals, and increasing age can increase of risk of angina pectoris. Vasodilators like Nitroglycerin work by widening the blood vessels. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Minitran comes as a transdermal patch. The patch delivers the medicine gradually and continuously through the skin and into the bloodstream to provide a sustained level of the medication. ¬Apply this medication to the skin only. Do not take it by mouth. Choose a clean, dry, hairless skin area on your upper arm or torso to apply the patch. Avoid areas with cuts, irritation, or scars. Rotate the application site daily to prevent skin irritation. Before applying the patch, ensure the skin is clean and dry. Do not apply lotion, cream, or powder to the area. Open the pouch and peel off the protective liner before applying it. Apply the patch firmly to the chosen skin area. Press the pouch down firmly for several seconds to ensure it adheres well to your skin. Wash your hands after applying or removing a skin patch. Do not wear more than one Minitran Patch at a time. The skin patch is usually worn for 12 to 14 hours and then removed. Your doctor will determine how long you should wear the patch each day. Often, there is a patch-free period of 8-12 hours to prevent tolerance. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding when to apply and remove the patch. Do not cut or trim the patch. If the patch falls off, apply a new one to a different site. You can bathe, shower, or swim while wearing the patch. After removing a skin patch fold it in half, sticky side in, and throw it away where children or pets cannot get to it. Do not stop using the patch suddenly without consulting your doctor. You may have increased angina attacks if you stop using the medication suddenly. This medicine may cause dizziness. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy.
