Mounjaro Information
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide Injection) is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this chronic condition, the body either fails to produce enough insulin or can't effectively use the insulin it produces, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Mounjaro is typically prescribed along with a healthy diet and exercise regimen to achieve optimal blood sugar control. Recent studies show it may also be used along with dietary and lifestyle modifications for weight loss in individuals who are obese (body mass index > 30 kg/m²), or who have weight-related health problems such as type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. The active ingredient in Mounjaro is tirzepatide, which belongs to a novel class of drugs known as dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which means it mimics the actions of two natural gut hormones, GIP and GLP-1, that play crucial roles in regulating blood sugar and appetite. Mounjaro works by activating both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. For type 2 diabetes, this dual action enhances the body's natural insulin release when blood sugar is high, reduces glucose production by the liver, and slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach. These mechanisms collectively lead to better blood sugar control. For weight management, it suppresses appetite and increases feelings of fullness, leading to reduced calorie intake and subsequent weight loss.

Consult your doctor if you plan to get pregnant, as tirzepatide should be stopped at least 1 month before a planned pregnancy. Mounjaro is not recommended for use in children. Tirzepatide may interact with other medications or substances, such as insulin, sulfonylureas, warfarin, and oral hormonal contraceptives. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal supplements, that you are taking before starting Mounjaro to prevent potential drug interactions. If you're taking oral hormonal birth control while using the tirzepatide, either switch to a non-oral contraceptive or use a barrier method for four weeks after starting and after each dose escalation. Doing so ensures your birth control remains effective.
Mounjaro is typically administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once weekly. You can inject it under the skin of your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. It's important to rotate your injection sites each week. Avoid injecting this medication into an area of skin that is sore, red, or infected. Typically, treatment starts with a low dose (2.5 mg) for four weeks to help your body adjust. The dose is then gradually increased based on your doctor's assessment and your body's response to it. Store this medication in the refrigerator protect it from light, but do not allow it to freeze. It may also be stored at room temperature for up to 21 days.
