Naphcon A (Naphazoline HCl/pheniramine maleate) Information

Naphcon A, which contains the active ingredients naphazoline HCl and pheniramine maleate, is an over-the-counter (OTC) ophthalmic solution used for the temporary relief of eye redness and itching caused by allergens such as pollen, ragweed, grass, and animal hair or dander. It is a combination medication that acts as both a redness reliever and an antihistamine. Naphcon A is intended for short-term use. If symptoms persist for more than 72 hours or worsen, you should stop use and consult a doctor.

The mechanism of action involves stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors on the blood vessels of the eye. This causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels), which reduces redness and swelling. It also acts as a competitive antagonist at H1 receptors. Blocking histamine from binding to these receptors prevents the itching, watering, and swelling that occur during an allergic response.

Naphcon A Side Effects

Naphcon A is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include temporary stinging or burning sensations upon instillation, blurred vision, or dilated pupils (mydriasis), which can lead to increased sensitivity to light. Overuse of the product can lead to rebound redness, where the eye becomes redder and more irritated once the medication wears off.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe Allergic Reactions: Symptoms include hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing.
• Severe Eye Issues: Intense eye pain, significant changes in vision, or worsening redness and swelling.
• Systemic Reactions: Signs that the drug is being absorbed into the body, such as a fast or irregular heartbeat, headache, excessive sweating, dizziness, nervousness, or tremors.

Naphcon A Precautions

Do not use Naphcon A if you have a known allergy to naphazoline HCl, pheniramine maleate, or any inactive ingredient in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate. Naphcon-A is generally not recommended for children under 6 years of age unless directed by a doctor, as they are at higher risk for severe systemic side effects.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Naphcon A has significant interactions with many drugs, especially Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic antidepressants, or certain medications for high blood pressure.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. There is limited information on the safety of Naphcon A during pregnancy. This drug should only be used in pregnancy after consulting your doctor and if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if naphazoline HCl or pheniramine maleate passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding. Also, apply pressure to the tear duct for at least one minute after application to minimize systemic absorption.

Apply Naphcon A exactly as your doctor tells you or according to the instructions on the product packaging. The standard dosing is to use one or two drops up to 4 times daily. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the medication. If you wear soft contact lenses, you must remove them before instilling the drops, as the preservative in the solution can discolor the lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after use before reinserting them. Tilt your head back and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pouch, then place 1 or 2 drops into the pouch without touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination. Close your eye gently and apply pressure to the inner corner (near the nose) for 1 to 2 minutes to prevent the medication from draining away. Do not use the solution if it has changed color or become cloudy. Store the bottle at room temperature (15°C-25°C), protect it from light, and keep it tightly closed when not in use. Always keep this medication out of the reach of children.
