Nesina Information
Nesina (Alogliptin) is used alone or with other medications to control blood sugar in individuals living with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is typically used along with a healthy diet and lifestyle modifications. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition where the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't effectively use the insulin it produces, leading to high blood sugar levels. Left uncontrolled, high blood sugar can lead to serious health complications over time. The active ingredient, alogliptin, belongs to a class of drugs known as Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. Alogliptin inhibits the action of the DPP-4 enzyme, which usually breaks down incretin hormones (like GLP-1 and GIP). By preventing this breakdown, alogliptin increases the levels of active incretin in the body. These incretins stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin when blood sugar levels are high and reduce the amount of sugar produced by the liver, thereby lowering blood glucose.
