NexGard Spectra Information
NexGard Spectra (Afoxolaner/Milbemycin Oxime) is used to treat and control flea and tick infestations in dogs. Flea infestations can cause symptoms such as excessive scratching, red bumps, hair loss, and flea dirt on the fur. Tick infestations include symptoms such as inflammation, lethargy, appetite loss, and visible ticks attached to the skin. The drug is also used to control worms, gastrointestinal nematods, mange, and mites. NexGard Spectra may also be used to treat zoonotic hookworms, whipworms, and roundworms. Ectoparasiticides like Afoxolaner kill external parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites. Endoparasiticides like Milbemycin Oxime kill endoparasites like worms.
NexGard Spectra Side Effects
The most common side effects of NexGard Spectra may include diarrhea, hyperactivity, lethargy, and vomiting. Call your veterinarian right away if your dog has any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Signs of neurological adverse reactions, such as tremors, ataxia, and seizures;
NexGard Spectra Precautions
Do not administer NexGard Spectra if your dog is allergic to Afoxolaner, Milbemycin Oxime, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start administering this medication, tell your veterinarian about your dog's medical history, including if it has a history of seizures or neurological disorders, pregnancy, breeding, or lactating. Tell your veterinarian about all your dog's medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between NexGard Spectra and other medications. Do not administer NexGard Spectra if your dog is pregnant, breeding, or lactating. The safety and effectiveness of NexGard Spectra in pregnant, breeding, or lactating dogs is unknown. Administer this medicine exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. NexGard Spectra comes as a chewable tablet. Administer this drug by mouth to your dog. This medicine is palatable to most dogs. You can administer the tablets alone or with food. Nevertheless, monitor your dog for a few minutes to ensure no part of the dose is lost. I
f you suspect any dose has been lost or vomiting occurs within 2 hours of administering the drug, administer another full dose. Your dog's dose will depend on its weight. The treatment period and dosing schedule will depend on what you are treating. For flea infestation, administer NexGard Spectra just before fleas become active. Administer NexGard Spectra every 30 days for effectiveness. Treat all household animals with an approved flea control product to minimize the likelihood of re-infestation. Do not use NexGard Spectra in other household animals. The drug is for use in puppies and dogs older than 8 weeks old only. To prevent heartworms, administer NexGard Spectra at monthly intervals beginning one month after the dog's first exposure to mosquitoes and continuing for 6 months after the dog's last exposure to mosquitoes. Do not take this drug. It is not for use in humans. Wash your hands immediately after administering the medicine. Store NexGard Spectra at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
