Nextstellis Information

Nextstellis (Estetrol monohydrate/Drospirenone) is used to prevent pregnancy. This birth control pill also makes your periods more regular and decreases blood loss and painful periods. It also reduces the risk of ovarian cysts. Progestins like Drospirenone work by preventing the fertilization of an egg by sperm or the release of an egg from the ovary. Estrogens like Estetrol monohydrate work by stopping a woman’s egg from fully developing each month to prevent fertilization. Nextstellis only prevents pregnancy. The drug does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, gonorrhea, and hepatitis B. Use an effective barrier method like condoms during sexual activity to reduce your risk of infection.

Nextstellis Side Effects

The most common side effects of Nextstellis may include nausea; vomiting; headache; abdominal cramps; breast tenderness; weight changes; swelling of the ankles or feet; Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Chest pain;
• Irregular or unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting between your menstrual periods;
• Severe breathing difficulties;
• Sudden, severe headache unlike your usual headaches;
• Weakness or numbness in your arm or leg

Nextstellis Precautions

Do not use Nextstellis if you are allergic to Estetrol monohydrate, Drospirenone, or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have had blood clots in your arms, legs, lungs, or eyes; have a blood clotting disorder; have heart valve problems; have had a heart attack or stroke; have uncontrolled high blood pressure; have liver problems; have unexplained vaginal bleeding; have severe migraine headaches with aura; have kidney disease; have adrenal insufficiency; are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Nextstellis and other medicines like phenytoin; itraconazole; ritonavir; phenobarbital; St. John’s wort; prednisone; mitotane;. Do not use Nextstellis if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. It is not known if this medication will harm your unborn baby. If you have just given birth or had a pregnancy loss after the first 3 months, talk with your doctor about reliable forms and birth control and find out when it is safe to use Nextstellis. Do not use Nextstellis while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. This medication passes into your breastmilk and may affect milk production and harm a nursing infant. Do not give this drug to children less than 18 years old. It may harm them.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop or change the dose of this medicine without talking to your doctor. Take this medication by mouth with or without food. Pick a time of day that is easy for you to remember and take the pill at the same time each day, 24 hours apart. If you have nausea or stomach upset after taking the medication, taking it with your evening meal or at bedtime may help. Nextstellis may be less effective if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Do not use this medication if you smoke cigarettes. Smoking increases your risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from birth control pills.
