Nidagel Information

Nidagel (Metronidazole) is a prescription vaginal gel used to treat bacterial vaginosis, a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the normal bacterial flora. The vagina primarily contains beneficial bacteria, specifically the Lactobacillus species. Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the good bacteria are replaced with harmful anaerobic bacteria. It in turn leads to symptoms such as unusual vagina discharge, odor, itching, and irritation. The active ingredient in Nidagel is metronidazole, which belongs to the nitroimidazole class of antibiotics. Metronidazole is a prodrug, meaning it becomes active once it enters the microbial cells. Inside these cells, it undergoes a chemical reduction, causing the damage of the bacteria DNA, disrupting their ability to replicate and ultimately causing their death. Nidagel delivers metronidazole directly to the vagina, where it can effectively reduce the overgrowth of the harmful bacteria causing the infection. By eliminating these problematic bacteria, Nidagel helps to restore the natural balance of good bacteria in the vagina, thereby alleviating the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.

Nidagel Side Effects

Like all medications, Nidagel may cause some side effects. Some common side effects include buzzing, ringing, or whistling sound heard in the ears, cramps, diarrhea, dizziness or lightheadedness, feeling of a furry tongue, headache, heavy bleeding, loss of appetite, metallic taste or other change in taste sensation, mild skin dryness and burning, nausea, and vomiting. Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Depression with symptoms like poor concentration, changes in sleep, decreased interest in activities;
• Fever or chills;
• Hearing loss;
• Liver problems with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, yellow eyes and skin;
• Pancreatitis with symptoms like severe abdominal pain, swollen abdomen;
• Seizures;
• Severe and bloody diarrhea;
• Vision problems, eye pain;
• Worsening vagina irritation

Nidagel Precautions

Do not use this topical medication if you are allergic to metronidazole or any other ingredients in Nidagel. Before applying this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Blood cell disorders such as low white blood cell counts;
• Cockayne syndrome;
• Fungal infections of the vaginal;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Pancreas problems;
• Underactive adrenal glands;
• Underactive thyroid gland

Avoid taking alcohol or alcoholic beverages while using this medication, as these substances can increase the risk of side effects. Metronidazole is typically not safe for use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. Therefore, consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Nidagel is not recommended for use in children younger than 12 years. Metronidazole may interact with other drugs or substances, such as alcohol, warfarin, and progesterone. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, including herbal supplements, that you are taking before starting Nidagel to prevent potential drug interactions. Apply this topical gel into your vagina, typically once daily at bedtime, for five consecutive days. Insert the prescribed dose into the vagina using the provided applicator.
