Norpamin Information

Norpamin (Desipramine) is used to treat low-mood depression. Norpamin at very low doses also helps reduce the pain associated with functional dyspepsia. It may also be useful to treat symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It improves your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in daily living. It may also be useful to treat symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Norpamin belongs to a class of medications called tricyclic antidepressants. It acts as a relatively selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, though it does also have other activities such as weak serotonin reuptake inhibitory, a1-blocking, antihistamine, and anticholinergic effects. It works by restoring the balance of a certain natural substance (norepinephrine) in the brain.

Norpamin Side Effects

Common side effects include; headache, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, nervousness, trouble sleeping, blurred vision, increased appetite, weight gain, constipation, and dry mouth. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of these serious side effects:
• Agitated;
• Anxiety;
• Difficulty breathing;
• Easy bruising;
• Hives;
• Hyperactivity (mental or physical);
• Impulsive behavior;
• Irritableness;
• Mood or behavior changes;
• Panic attacks;
• Restlessness;
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat;

Norpamin Precautions

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or other tricyclic antidepressants (such as imipramine, and amitriptyline); or if you have any other allergies. Also tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Breathing problems (such as asthma, and chronic bronchitis);
• Diabetes;
• Eating disorders (such as bulimia);
• Heart problems (such as arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, and heart attack);
• Kidney problems, personal or family history of other mental/mood conditions;
• Liver problems;
• Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism);
• Personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type);
• Seizures;
• Trouble urinating (such as due to enlarged prostate).

Do not suddenly stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely. Be careful in hot weather or while being active. Drink lots of fluids to stop fluid loss. Do not start Norpamin if you stopped taking a drug from the same class in the last 2 weeks unless directed to do so by your physician. Older adults should not take Norpamin because it is not as safe or effective as other medications that can be used to treat the same condition. Inform your doctor about other medications or supplements you are using; Norpamin may interact with:
• Anticholinergics (such as atropine, belladonna alkaloids, and scopolamine);
• Certain drugs for high blood pressure (such as clonidine, guanadrel, guanethidine);
• Digoxin;
• Disopyramide;
• Thyroid supplements;
• Valproic acid.
