Ocuflox Opht (Ofloxacin) Information

Ocuflox Opht, which contains the active ingredient ofloxacin, is a prescription fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. It is specifically FDA-approved for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers. It is not effective against viral or fungal infections.

The mechanism of action involves killing bacterial cells. It achieves this by inhibiting DNA gyrase (a type II DNA topoisomerase), an enzyme that bacteria need to repair, replicate, and transcribe their DNA. By blocking this enzyme, the medication prevents the bacteria from growing and spreading, allowing the body's immune system to clear the infection.

Ocuflox Opht Side Effects

Ocuflox Opht is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include a temporary stinging or burning sensation immediately after applying the drops, as well as blurred vision, red eyes, or itching. Other frequently reported effects include watery eyes, dryness, a feeling that something is in the eye (foreign body sensation), mild swelling or puffiness of the eyelids, and increased sensitivity to light (photophobia).

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• New or Worsening Infection: If your symptoms do not improve or if you notice new discharge, increased pain, or severe redness.
• Severe Allergic Reactions: Signs include hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or significant difficulty breathing or swallowing.
• Severe Skin Reactions: A rare but dangerous rash that may cause blistering or peeling.

Ocuflox Opht Precautions

Do not use Ocuflox Opht if you have a known allergy to ofloxacin, any inactive ingredient in the medication, or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin or levofloxacin. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have other pre-existing eye conditions. Ocuflox is generally not recommended for infants under 1 year of age.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Ocuflox Opht has no significant drug-drug interactions with other drugs.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. It is unknown if Ocuflox is safe for use in pregnancy. Ocuflox Opht should only be used in pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risk to the fetus. Orally administered ofloxacin passes into breast milk. While the risk from eye drops is considered minimal, you should discuss with your doctor whether to continue nursing or stop the medication. To minimize absorption, apply pressure to the tear duct for at least one minute after use.

Use Ocuflox Opht exactly as your doctor tells you. Ocuflox is an ophthalmic solution that should be used in the eyes. Do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly before using this medication to prevent contamination. Do not wear soft contact lenses during treatment, as the preservative in the drops can discolor them. Your doctor may advise you to avoid contact lenses entirely until the infection is gone. To apply, tilt your head back and pull down the lower lid to create a small pocket. Instill the prescribed number of drops without touching the dropper tip to your eye, fingers, or any other surface. For bacterial conjunctivitis, the typical dose is 1–2 drops every 2–4 hours for the first two days, followed by 4 times daily for up to 5 more days.

For corneal ulcers, a more intensive schedule is required, often involving doses every 30 minutes while awake and once during the night. Immediately after application, apply gentle pressure to the inner corner of your eye (the tear duct) for 1 to 2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption. Because the drops can cause temporary blurred vision, avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision clears. Always complete the full course of treatment even if your symptoms improve early to prevent the infection from returning. Store the bottle at room temperature (15°C-25°C), away from moisture and heat, and protect it from light. Do not use the medication if it has changed color or contains particles, and keep it safely out of the reach of children.
