Ocunox (Ocunox) Information

Ocunox is a preservative-free, phosphate-free ophthalmic ointment primarily used for the intensive nighttime relief of dry, tired, or sensitive eyes. It is specifically designed to improve the eye's tear film and protect the ocular surface during sleep, when natural tear production significantly decreases. Because it is gentle and free of harsh chemicals, it is often recommended for chronic dry eye sufferers, individuals with lagophthalmos (incomplete eyelid closure), or for recovery after eye surgery or injury.

The mechanism of action involves creating a protective lipid barrier over the surface of the eye. Its active ingredient, Vitamin A (retinol palmitate), is a natural component of the human tear film. This lipid-rich formula (consisting of liquid paraffin, light liquid paraffin, and wool fat/lanolin) stabilizes the tear film and prevents moisture from evaporating while you sleep. Furthermore, Vitamin A supports the health and healing of the corneal epithelium, promotes mucin production, and helps prevent the keratinization (hardening) of the eye's surface.

Ocunox Side Effects

Ocunox is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include temporary blurred vision immediately after application, mild stinging or burning sensation, and sticky or gummy eyelids due to ointment residue.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Eye pain
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as eyelid swelling, rash around the eyes, or hives (specifically if sensitive to lanolin/wool fat)
• Vision changes that do not resolve within a few minutes of waking.

Ocunox Precautions

Do not use Ocunox if you have a known allergy to Vitamin A or any inactive ingredient in the medication (such as lanolin). Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have a persistent eye infection.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Ocunox has no significant drug-drug interactions with other drugs. However, always apply other eye drops first, then wait at least 30 minutes before applying Ocunox to ensure proper absorption of the drops and to prevent the thick ointment from blocking other medicines.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Ocunox is generally considered safe for use by pregnant and breastfeeding women. Because it is a topical lubricant with negligible systemic absorption, it does not typically pose a risk to the developing fetus or nursing infant. Use Ocunox exactly as your doctor tells you. Ocunox is an ophthalmic medication. Do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the medication. Tilt your head back slightly and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Squeeze a small strip of ointment (about 1 cm or the size of a grain of rice) into this pocket, being careful not to touch the tube tip to your eye, eyelashes, or skin to avoid contamination. Close your eyes slowly and blink normally to help distribute the medication. Because your vision will be blurred, you should not drive, operate machinery, or walk in poorly lit areas immediately after application.

Remove contact lenses before using Ocunox, and do not reinsert them for at least 30 minutes; it is strongly recommended to leave them out until the following morning. Store the tube at room temperature (15°C to 25°C) and ensure the cap is tightly closed after each use. Do not fold or coil the tube, as this can cause cracks in the metal packaging. Once opened, Ocunox can be used for up to 6 months before it must be discarded. Always keep the medication safely out of the reach of children.
