Odefsey Information

Odefsey (Emtricitabine/Rilpivirine/Tenofovir Alafenamide) is a medication primarily used for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It is typically used in adults and adolescents who are starting therapy with a lower viral load or who have already controlled the virus with another treatment regimen. Its active ingredients are emtricitabine, rilpivirine, and tenofovir alafenamide combined into a single once-daily pill. Odefsey belongs to the class of antiretroviral medications, specifically a mix of two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (emtricitabine and tenofovir) and one non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (rilpivirine). It essentially works by blocking a key viral enzyme called reverse transcriptase, which is crucial for HIV to multiply and spread within the body. Ultimately, this action reduces the amount of HIV in the blood and appears to enhance the immune system's function.

Odefsey Side Effects

Some mild side effects of this medication include abdominal discomfort, fatigue, headache, nausea, and sleep problems. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen. Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including the following:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Bone pain or fractures;
• Depression;
• Fever, chill, rigor, cough, body rash, and other symptoms of infection;
• Lactic acidosis;
• Liver problems with symptoms such as yellowing of skin or eyes, darkened urine, light-coloured stools, nausea, and vomiting

Odefsey Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to the active and inactive ingredients of Odefsey. Before using this medication, ensure you inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Autoimmune conditions such as Graves’ disease, Guillain-Barré syndrome;
• Bone problems such as osteoporosis;
• Diabetes;
• Heart disease, including abnormal heart rhythm;
• High blood cholesterol levels;
• Kidney disease;
• Lactose intolerance;
• Liver disease, including hepatitis B infection;
• Mental or mood disorders such as depression;
• Pancreatic diseases such as pancreatitis

Do not drive or operate machines if you feel tired, sleepy, or dizzy after taking this medicine. Consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy. Women living with HIV infection should not breastfeed as it can be passed to the baby via breast milk. Therefore, avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication. This medication should not be used in children younger than 12 years or weighing less than 35 kg. This antiretroviral medication may interact with other drugs or substances, such as anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin and carbamazepine), omeprazole, dexamethasone, and rifampicin, as well as rifabutin. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines, including herbal supplements, that you are taking before using Odefsey to prevent potential drug interactions.

Take one Odefsey tablet orally, once daily, preferably with food for better absorption. Consult your doctor for the appropriate dose for you. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or break it into pieces. If you miss a dose by less than 12 hours, take it as soon as possible with food. If it's over 12 hours, skip it and resume your regular schedule. Apply caution with other acid-reducing drugs, because they can interfere with absorption.
