Omacor Information
Omacor (Omega-3 acid ethyl esters) is an antilipemic or lipid-regulating prescription medication used to reduce severely high levels of triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood), a condition known as severe hypertriglyceridemia. It is typically used along with dietary modifications, as it works alongside a proper, often low-fat and low-cholesterol diet. It is specifically prescribed when nutritional changes alone haven't been enough to bring the triglyceride levels down. A persistently high triglyceride level may increase a person's risk of developing severe complications, such as cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack or stroke. It could also lead to inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
The way this medication works is generally not well understood. However, it contains Omega-3-acid ethyl esters, specifically, highly purified ethyl esters of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, which seem to interfere with the body's fat-production process in the liver. It may also increase the breakdown of fatty acids in the liver, meaning the body is burning up more of the fats that would otherwise turn into triglycerides. It ultimately leads to a reduction in triglyceride levels by almost 50%, according to some studies. It also causes about a 40% reduction in some other forms of fat in the blood. However, it does tend to increase the level of bad cholesterol, prompting the need for regular check-ups while taking this medication.
Omacor Side Effects
Like any other prescription drug, there are potential side effects associated with the use of this medication. The most frequently reported side effects often involve the digestive system. You may experience a nasty, unpleasant, or fishy aftertaste (eructation or fish burps), stomach discomfort, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, or flatulence. Some less common side effects include headache, dizziness, or a rash on the body.
More serious side effects can occur, although they are rare. If you experience any of the following, you should stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat, body itching;
• Atrial Fibrillation with symptoms such as abnormal awareness of your heartbeat (palpitation), fast and irregular heartbeat, dizziness, and chest pain;
• Bleeding Risk, with symptoms such as nose bleeds, blood in stools;
• High blood sugar;
• Liver problems such as yellow eyes and skin, nausea, and vomiting;
• Low blood pressure with symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness
Inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.
Omacor Precautions
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to the active and inactive ingredients in Omacor or other antilipemic medications. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions, including the following:
• Diabetes;
• Heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver problems;
• Recent trauma or surgery
Checking with your doctor regularly while taking this medication is imperative. Your doctor may need to periodically monitor your liver function using blood tests (like ALT and AST) while you are on Omacor, especially if you have liver problems. While Omacor is effective at lowering triglycerides, some individuals may see a slight increase in their LDL-C (bad cholesterol) levels. Therefore, your doctor will need to monitor your overall lipid panel regularly to make sure your LDL-C doesn't rise to an unacceptable level.
Omacor, like other high-dose omega-3 fatty acids, can mildly prolong bleeding time, potentially leading to bleeding disorders, mainly when used with drugs that affect blood clotting, such as blood thinners and aspirin. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider about all the medicines and herbal medications you are taking before using Omacor to prevent potential drug interactions. Also, tell your doctor that you are taking this medication if you are scheduled for surgery. The increased potential for bleeding needs to be factored into your care.
It's generally advised not to use Omacor during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor determines that the potential benefit clearly outweighs any possible risk to the fetus or infant. This medication is not suitable for use in children under 18. Caution is advised when using this medication in older adults, as they may be more prone to its side effects.
Take Omacor capsules orally with plenty of water, specifically at mealtimes, to prevent gastrointestinal side effects. The usual dose is two capsules a day, as recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may adjust the dose depending on your response to treatment. Use this medication regularly as prescribed and avoid overdose. Check out the leaflets in the medication pack for more usage details. Store this medication at less than 25°C, but do not freeze. Keep away from children and pets.
