Opzelura Information

Opzelura (Ruxolitinib) is used to treat skin conditions like eczema (atopic dermatitis) and nonsegmental vitiligo. Eczema is a chronic condition that causes inflammation, redness, and irritation. It can cause dry, itchy, and scaly skin. Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes white patches on the skin. Kinase inhibitors like Ruxolitinib weaken the immune system and help relieve symptoms of skin conditions.

Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have an infection; have diabetes; have had shingles; have or have had hepatitis B or C; have high cholesterol; think you may be pregnant or plan to become pregnant; are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Opzelura and other medications, like other topical medications. Do not use Opzelura if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant without informing your doctor. Ruxolitinib should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Do not use Opzelura while breastfeeding without talking to your doctor. It is not known if Ruxolitinib passes into your breastmilk or if it may harm nursing infants. This drug is not recommended for use in children below 12 years of age. Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Opzelura is a topical medication.

Wash your hands with soap and water before using it. Apply only on the skin. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, or vagina. If the drug gets into these areas, flush with plenty of water. Apply a thin layer of Opzelura to the affected areas of the skin, usually twice a day. Rub the medication into the skin gently and thoroughly. Wash your hands after applying the medication. If you are treating eczema, your doctor may instruct you to stop using this drug once your eczema has cleared and to start using it again if your symptoms reappear. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve after 8 weeks of treating eczema or after 24 weeks of treating vitiligo. Opzelura may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children.
