Otovel (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride/Fluocinolone Acetonide)

Otovel (Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride/Fluocinolone Acetonide) is a prescription ear drop specifically used to treat middle ear infections caused by certain types of bacteria in children (6 months and older) who have surgical tubes in their ears (tympanostomy tubes) to prevent excessive buildup of fluid in the ear.

Otovel contains two active ingredients: ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and fluocinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid. As a combination of an antibiotic/corticosteroid otic solution, it offers a dual-action approach to treating resistant infections. Ciprofloxacin, a ciprofloxacin, inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial growth, whereas fluocinolone suppresses the inflammatory response by inhibiting prostaglandin production.

In children with an infected middle ear, fluid and bacteria can accumulate, leading to visible drainage from the ear. Because the tube provides a direct channel, these ear drops bypass the eardrum to deliver the medicine exactly where it's needed. This is more effective than oral antibiotics for this condition, as the steroid rapidly reduces the swelling that traps fluid. In contrast, this medication clears the underlying infection, often resolving symptoms more quickly than using antibiotics alone.

Otovel Side Effects

Like other medications, Otovel can cause some side effects. Common side effects of this medication include fluid draining from the ear, ear infection, ear itching, extra tissue that grows on a part of the body that has been injured, swelling of the outer ear, ear pain, or balance problems. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Stop using this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, especially allergic reactions, such as breathing difficulties, itching, rash, skin blistering, or swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat.

Otovel Precautions

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, fluocinolone, or any other ingredients in Otovel. Given its active components, this medication can promote the proliferation of microorganisms, including viruses and fungi, thereby increasing the risk of other infections. Before using this medication, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you have had or currently have, particularly active viral infection affecting the outer ear canal or a fungal infection.

Consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding to determine if it's suitable for you. However, it is not expected to harm the fetus or a breastfed baby. This medication is not ideal for use in children younger than 6 months. Some medicines may interact with the active ingredients in Otovel, particularly those used topically, resulting in adverse reactions. Therefore, it is essential to inform your healthcare provider of all medications, including other topical ear medications and over-the-counter medications, that you are taking before using Otovel to assess potential drug interactions.

This medication is available as ear drops to be applied into the affected ear canal as directed by your doctor or as stated in the medication pack. It is advised to first warm the single-dose vial in your hands for one to two minutes to prevent dizziness from cold liquid. Refer to the leaflet in the medication pack for additional usage instructions. Contact your doctor immediately if you continue to experience fluid discharge from your ear after finishing treatment with Otovel, or if you experience fluid discharge two or more times within 6 months after treatment with Otovel has stopped.
