Ovestin Information

Ovestin (Estriol) is a medicated cream that contains Estriol. It belongs to a group of medications called Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It works to relieve menopause symptoms in the vagina such as dryness or irritation, known as vaginal atrophy. Typically during menopause, a decrease in the levels of estrogen occurs in the body. Ovestin replaces the estrogen that is produced in the ovaries to increase its levels in the body. Ovestin is inserted into the vagina, the hormones are released in the places it is needed to relieve discomfort experienced in the vagina during menopause. The amount of Ovestin you use should be recommended by your doctor. It is usually once a day before going to bed for two weeks and then twice a week. You may notice a difference after using the cream but if you discontinue using the medication before the prescribed time the problem may return.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it. This medication may contain some ingredients that can cause allergic reactions. Inform your doctor if you have a medical history of vaginal bleeding, certain cancers, blood clots, stroke or heart disease. Some side effects that may occur while using this medication are nausea/vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, headache or weight changes.
