Pataday Eye Drops (Olopatadine) Information

Pataday Eye Drops, which contains the active ingredient olopatadine, is a prescription-strength, over-the-counter (OTC) ophthalmic antihistamine. It is used for the temporary relief of itchy eyes caused by seasonal and perennial allergies, such as pollen, ragweed, grass, animal hair, and dander.

The mechanism of action involves blocking histamine H1 receptors, preventing existing histamine from causing itchiness. It also stabilizes mast cells, preventing the release of additional histamine and other inflammatory mediators. This dual action provides both immediate relief and long-term protection against allergic triggers.

Pataday Eye Drops Side Effects

Pataday Eye Drops is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include temporary stinging or burning sensations immediately after application, blurred vision, dry eyes, or a feeling that something is in your eye (foreign body sensation). You may also experience a mild headache, changes in taste, or cold-like symptoms, such as a sore throat or runny nose.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe eye pain
• Significant changes in your vision
• Signs of severe allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, or significant breathing difficulties
• Worsening redness and itching

Pataday Eye Drops Precautions

Do not use Pataday Eye Drops if you have a known allergy to olopatadine or any inactive ingredient in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have other eye conditions.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Pataday Eye Drops has no known significant drug-drug interactions. However, if you are using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between each product.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. It is unknown whether Pataday is safe to use during pregnancy. Use this medicine in pregnancy only if the benefits justify the risks. It is not known if olopatadine passes into breast milk when used as an eye drop. Consult your doctor before use and apply pressure to the tear duct for one minute after application to minimize absorption.

Use Pataday Eye Drops exactly as directed on the packaging. The eye drops are for use in the eyes only. Do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly before using the eye drops. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before use. Wait at least 15 minutes after instilling the drops before reinserting your lenses, as the lens material can absorb the preservative. Tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid, and instill one drop into the eye. Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any surface to prevent contamination. Immediately after application, apply pressure to the inner corner of the eye (the tear duct) for 1 to 2 minutes. Store the bottle at room temperature (between 2°C and 25°C or 36°F and 77°F) and keep the cap tightly closed when not in use. Ensure the medication is kept safely out of the reach of children.
