Pazeo (Olapatadine hydrochloride) Information

Pazeo 0.7%, which contains the active ingredient olapatadine hydrochloride, is a prescription-strength antihistamine eye drop. It is specifically indicated for the temporary relief of itchy eyes caused by allergic conjunctivitis triggered by pollen, ragweed, grass, and animal dander. Pazeo is approved for use in adults and children 2 years of age and older.

The mechanism of action involves blocking existing histamine from binding to receptors in the eye to stop itching, while simultaneously preventing mast cells from releasing more inflammatory chemicals. It also inhibits eosinophil activation, further reducing the allergic response. Pazeo is designed for once-daily dosing. The drug provides 24-hour relief with a single drop.

Pazeo Side Effects

Pazeo is generally well-tolerated, but common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medication. Commonly reported effects include blurred vision, dry eye, or a burning or stinging sensation immediately after application. Other common effects include headache, a runny or stuffy nose, a sore throat, temporary light sensitivity, and a change in taste (dysgeusia).

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• Severe Allergic Reactions: Symptoms such as hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or significant difficulty breathing.
• Severe Eye Issues: Intense eye pain, significant changes in vision, or eye itching that worsens or lasts longer than 72 hours.
• Signs of Infection: Eye swelling, severe redness, crusting, or unusual drainage.

Pazeo Precautions

Do not use Pazeo if you have a known allergy to olapatadine hydrochloride or any inactive ingredient in the medication. Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have any eye infections or other pre-existing eye conditions.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. There are no known significant drug-drug interactions between Pazeo and other drugs. If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between products to ensure each is absorbed correctly.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. The safety of Pazeo in pregnant women is unknown. This medicine should be used only during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if this medicine passes into breast milk in detectable quantities. Caution is advised when using Pazeo during breastfeeding.

Use Pazeo exactly as your doctor tells you. This medicine should be applied to the eyes only. Do not take it by mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly before using Pazeo. Do not wear soft contact lenses while your eyes are red or irritated. If your eyes are not red, remove your contacts before use and wait at least 15 minutes after instilling the drops before reinserting them, as the preservative can stain or discolor the lenses. Tilt your head back, pull the lower lid down to create a pocket, and instill one drop without touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelid, or any other surface. After instilling, gently press your finger to the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) for 1 to 2 minutes to prevent the medication from draining out. Store the bottle at room temperature (68°F to 77°F) and keep it tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
