Percorten-V Information
Percorten-V (Desoxycortone Pivalate) is used to treat primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease) in dogs. In this condition, the body fails to produce enough hormones that control salt and water balance, leading to symptoms like weakness, vomiting, dehydration, and even collapse if left untreated. Corticosteroids like Desoxycortone Pivalate replace one of the missing hormones, the mineralocorticoid, which helps keep your dog’s electrolytes (sodium and potassium) in the right balance and supports hydration and blood pressure.
Percorten-V Side Effects
The most common side effects of Percorten-V may include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and lethargy. Call your veterinarian right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Fluid retention;
• High blood pressure;
• Injection site reactions, such as pain, swelling, or infection;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
Percorten-V Precautions
Do not use Percorten-V if your dog is allergic to Desoxycortone Pivalate or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start administering this medication, tell your veterinarian about your dog’s medical history, including if it has congestive heart failure, severe kidney disease, edema, serious bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, is pregnant or breeding, or is lactating. Tell your veterinarian about all your dog’s medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Percorten-V and other medications, such as furosemide, digoxin, phenytoin, aspirin, insulin, etc. Do not use Percorten-V if your dog is pregnant, breeding, or lactating. The safety and effectiveness of this medicine in pregnant, breeding, or lactating dogs have not been established. Always consult your veterinarian before giving Percorten-V to a pregnant or lactating dog.
Administer this medicine exactly as prescribed by your veterinarian. Percorten-V comes as an injectable suspension that is administered into a muscle. This medicine should never be injected into a vein as it can cause severe reactions like collapse or shock. Most dogs need an injection once every 3 to 4 weeks (about every 25 days). Your vet will decide the exact schedule based on your dog’s response and lab results. Dosing is usually based on the dog’s body weight. Dogs with Addison’s disease typically need two kinds of hormone replacements – Percorten-V and either prednisone or prednisolone. Together, these medications help keep your dog’s electrolytes and energy levels stable. Your vet will check sodium and potassium levels around 2 weeks and 4 weeks after each injection. Based on these results, your vet may adjust your dog’s dose or medication timing to keep electrolytes in a healthy range. Store Percorten-V at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
