Peridex Information

Peridex (Chlorhexidine 0.12%) is primarily used to reduce the redness, swelling, and bleeding associated with gingivitis. It may also be prescribed after periodontal surgery or tooth extractions to help keep the site clean when mechanical brushing is either too painful or physically restricted. Some doctors also use it to help manage recurrent mouth sores, though this is often an off-label use. The active ingredient in this medication is chlorhexidine gluconate. It belongs to the biguanide class of antimicrobial agents. It works through a mechanism in which the chlorhexidine molecule, which carries a strong positive charge, binds to the negatively charged bacterial cell walls. This interaction appears to destabilize the bacterial membrane, causing the cell's internal components to leak out and leading to its death. Because the medication also binds to soft tissues in the mouth and is slowly released, it provides a sustained reduction in bacterial activity over several hours.

Gingivitis is an inflammatory condition in which the gums become red, swollen, and prone to bleeding, usually due to bacterial plaque accumulating along the gum line. Peridex helps to significantly reduce the concentration of these bacteria and prevent them from reattaching to the tooth surface. In situations involving dental surgery or painful mouth ulcers, the rinse acts as a chemical cleanser for areas too sensitive for a toothbrush. It reduces the underlying cause of inflammation by controlling the bacterial population, allowing the gum tissue to heal and regain its normal structure.

Peridex Side Effects

Like all medications, chlorhexidine can cause some side effects. Common side effects of this medication include changes in taste, inflammation of salivary glands, irritation of the gums and other areas of the mouth, shedding of skin from the mouth, and staining of teeth, dentures, or fillings. Contact your doctor if these common side effects persist or worsen.

Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, especially allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat. Peridex Precautions

Do not use this oral rinse if you are allergic to chlorhexidine, other ingredients in Peridex, or any other medicines. Before you start taking this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any prior or current medical conditions. If you have gingivitis coexisting with periodontitis, treating the inflammation of the gums from gingivitis does not indicate that the periodontitis has also been treated. You should continue your periodontitis treatment as prescribed by your dentist. The safety and effectiveness in individuals under 18 years of age have not been fully established. It may, however, be used safely by pregnant and breastfeeding women. The usual dose of this oral solution is 15 milliliters. Swish the liquid vigorously around your mouth for thirty seconds before spitting it out completely. Perform this routine twice daily, typically after your morning and evening meals as stated in the medication pack. Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth for at least thirty minutes after rinsing your mouth with this oral solution. Peridex is strictly for rinsing and spitting out. If a large amount is swallowed, it can cause significant stomach distress or signs of alcohol intoxication. Store the solution at room temperature, protect it from light, and keep it out of the reach of children.
