PreserVision Information
PreserVision is a brand of eye vitamin and mineral supplements formulated to support eye health, primarily for individuals with moderate to advanced Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Specifically, PreserVision AREDS 2 formula contains the exact nutrient blend recommended by the National Eye Institute (NEI) based on the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) clinical trial. This formula typically includes Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc, and Copper. These antioxidants and minerals are thought to help reduce the risk of progression to advanced AMD by protecting against oxidative stress and supporting the health of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. PreserVision is a dietary supplement and not a treatment or cure for AMD.
PreserVision Side Effects
The most common side effects of PreserVision may include constipation, nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, a metallic taste in the mouth, and other gastrointestinal distress. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, hives, itching, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat)
• Muscle weakness
• Numbness or tingling
• Severe diarrhea
• Severe stomach pain
• Symptoms of copper deficiency (e.g., unexplained fatigue, pallor, frequent infections, neurological issues like numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of balance), especially if taking additional zinc supplements
PreserVision Precautions
Do not use PreserVision if you are allergic to any of the components in the formulations. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have hypervitaminosis (excessively high levels of vitamins) or if you have any significant kidney or liver disease. While AREDS2 formulas are beta-carotene free and generally considered safe for current or former smokers, individuals with a smoking history should always discuss any supplements with their doctor. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between PreserVision and other medications, sometimes significantly. For example, the high dose of Vitamin E in AREDS formulas may interact with blood thinners like warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. The high dose of Zinc (80 mg) in the AREDS2 formula is balanced with copper (2 mg) to prevent copper deficiency, as zinc supplementation alone can cause copper deficiency. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using PreserVision. PreserVision is generally not intended for use during pregnancy; it should only be used if needed and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before using PreserVision. While some vitamins and minerals are present in breast milk, caution is advised due to the high dosages, and you should consult with your healthcare provider. Do not administer adult formulations to children, as adult dosages can be toxic to children.
Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor or as directed on the label. PreserVision typically comes as soft gels or capsules. The recommended dosage for the AREDS2 formula is one soft gel or capsule taken orally twice daily with food (e.g., one in the morning and one in the evening). Take it with meals to help reduce stomach upset and enhance absorption. Swallow the soft gel or capsule whole. Do not crush or chew it. Be consistent with how you take it and inform your doctor if you are taking it with food. PreserVision is a dietary supplement and not a replacement for a balanced diet. If you are unsure whether you are taking enough copper, consult a healthcare practitioner before use. It is essential to take both doses of PreserVision as prescribed, as your body may not absorb all the nutrients. Store PreserVision at room temperature, typically between 15 °C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F). Store it in a secure location where it will not be exposed to excessive heat, moisture, or direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
