Prinivil (Lisinopril) Information

Prinivil, which contains the active ingredient lisinopril, is an ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor. It is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children at least 6 years of age. In adults, it is also prescribed for heart failure and to improve survival after a heart attack. The medication is taken by mouth as a tablet, typically once daily. It can be used alone or in combination with other blood pressure-lowering medications to help protect your health by reducing the strain on your heart and blood vessels.

The mechanism of action of lisinopril involves blocking a specific enzyme in the body, which relaxes blood vessels and reduces the production of certain hormones that can raise blood pressure. This process allows blood to flow more easily, decreasing the workload on the heart and reducing the risk of damage to vital organs.

Prinivil Side Effects

Prinivil is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may occur as your body adjusts to the medicine. Commonly reported effects include a persistent dry cough, dizziness or lightheadedness, headache, fatigue, and mild stomach upset or diarrhea.

More serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. Stop taking the medication and seek help if you experience:
• High potassium levels: Muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or a tingling sensation in the hands or feet.
• Kidney problems: Significant changes in how much you urinate or signs of fluid retention.
• Rare liver problems: Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or persistent abdominal pain.
• Severe allergic reactions: Rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing.

Prinivil Precautions

Do not use Prinivil if you are allergic to lisinopril or any other ACE inhibitor or if you have a history of severe allergic swelling (angioedema). Before starting treatment, inform your doctor of your complete medical history, especially if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or cardiovascular conditions. Tell your doctor about all medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Prinivil may interact with certain blood pressure medications, water pills (diuretics), potassium supplements, or NSAIDs like ibuprofen.

Prinivil may cause low blood pressure, especially after the first dose or if you are dehydrated, on a low-salt diet, or taking diuretics (“water pills”). Dizziness or fainting may occur, particularly when standing up quickly. Specific individuals, including Black patients, may have a higher risk of developing angioedema while taking ACE inhibitors.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Prinivil should not be used during pregnancy as it can cause serious injury or death to a developing fetus. Small amounts may pass into breast milk; consult your doctor to weigh the risks and benefits.

Use Prinivil exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken at the same time each day to maintain steady levels in your bloodstream. Do not stop using the medication without consulting your doctor, as your blood pressure may increase. Store the tablets at room temperature, away from heat and light, and keep out of reach of children.
