Proferrin Information

Proferrin (Heme Iron Polypeptide) is used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia, including anemia caused by low iron intake, poor iron absorption, increased iron needs, or iron loss due to blood loss. Iron deficiency anemia is a condition where the body doesn't have enough iron to produce sufficient hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. This leads to a reduced number of red blood cells or abnormal red blood cells, which results in the body's tissues not receiving enough oxygen. Proferrin is used in individuals at risk of iron deficiency or who need to increase their iron levels. Iron supplements like heme iron polypeptide deliver iron in a form that the body recognizes and can absorb directly through a special pathway in the gut. Once inside the body, the iron is released and used to help the body make red blood cells.

Proferrin Side Effects

The most common side effects of Proferrin may include abdominal pain, changes in taste, constipation, dark stools, diarrhea, nausea, and upset stomach. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, such as:
• Bloody diarrhea;
• Chest pain;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, breathing difficulties, itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat;
• Signs of iron overdose, such as severe stomach pain, weakness, severe nausea, rapid heartbeat, etc

Proferrin Precautions

Do not use Proferrin if you are allergic to Heme Iron Polypeptide or other ingredients in this medication. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you have anemia not caused by iron deficiency, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), iron overload disorders like hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis, kidney disease, liver disease, think you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Proferrin and other medications, such as calcium supplements, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, levothyroxine, alendronate, vitamin C, etc. Antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum hydroxide can bind to iron in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, potentially reducing its absorption. It's generally recommended to separate the administration of Proferrin and antacids by at least 2 hours. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using Proferrin. Iron requirements significantly increase during pregnancy to support the growing fetus, placenta, and the mother's expanding blood volume. Iron deficiency anemia is common during pregnancy and can pose risks to both the mother and the baby. While Proferrin might be a suitable option for iron supplementation during pregnancy, a pregnant woman should discuss her iron levels with a doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed before using Proferrin. It is unknown if Heme Iron Polypeptide passes into breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. Do not use this medicine in children without talking to your doctor. Iron supplementation in children is based on age.

Use your medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Proferrin comes as a tablet. Swallow the tablet by mouth. Do not crush, chew, or break it. You can take Proferrin with or without food. Taking it on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal may enhance absorption. However, if you experience stomach upset, you can take Proferrin with food. Be consistent with how you take it and inform your doctor if you are taking it with food. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking the tablet. Take Proferrin at the same time(s) each day to help you remember. Your doctor may order regular blood tests to monitor your iron levels and adjust your dosage as needed. It may take several weeks or months of regular use to see an improvement in your iron levels. Continue taking Proferrin as directed by your doctor. Proferrin is a supplement and not a replacement for a well-balanced diet rich in iron. Store Proferrin at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
