What is Proscar (Finasteride) Used For?

Proscar (Finasteride) is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor primarily used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men who have an enlarged prostate. It is also used to reduce the risk of a sudden inability to pass urine, a condition called acute urinary retention, and to decrease the likelihood that a patient will need surgery related to benign prostatic hyperplasia, such as a prostatectomy or a transurethral resection of the prostate. Also, it may be prescribed alongside another drug called doxazosin to prevent the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia from getting worse. While not its primary approved use, finasteride is sometimes used off-label and under close monitoring to treat excessive hair growth in women, known as hirsutism.

Finasteride works by blocking type II 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting standard testosterone into a much stronger hormone called dihydrotestosterone. Because dihydrotestosterone is the primary driver behind prostate tissue growth and genetic hair follicle shrinkage, lowering its production halts these processes. By taking finasteride daily, the dihydrotestosterone levels drop by roughly 70%. Without high levels of this hormone signaling the prostate to increase in size, the prostate gradually shrinks, relieving pressure on the urethra to improve urinary flow. While finasteride stops hair follicle shrinkage on the scalp, this 5 mg strength is specifically targeted for prostate reduction rather than standard male pattern baldness.

Be sure to take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. For more information on its use, view the full product monograph.

What Side Effects Can Proscar or Generic Finasteride Cause?

While finasteride is generally well-tolerated, blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone has effects on the whole body. The more common side effects include decreased sexual drive, difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection, a decrease in the volume of ejaculate, breast tenderness or enlargement, and mild ache or discomfort in the testicles. Some sexual side effects may persist even after stopping the medication. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

Serious side effects may include:
• Allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, body itching, body rash, skin blistering, swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, lips, or throat;
• Behavior and mood changes, including depression and anxiety;
• Breast lump, nipple discharge and pain, or breast tissue enlargement (potential signs of male breast cancer);
• Suicidal thoughts and ideation;

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms. Ensure you inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Warnings

Do not use this medication if you have an allergic reaction to finasteride or other ingredients in Proscar. It is also strongly contraindicated in children and women of reproductive age, including pregnant and breastfeeding women. Women who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant must not touch broken or crushed Proscar tablets, as finasteride can be absorbed directly through the skin and cause congenital disabilities in a developing male fetus. If accidental skin contact occurs with a damaged tablet, wash the skin area immediately with soap and water. Caution is advised when using this medication in individuals with obstructive uropathy and compromised liver function. Before starting this medication, ensure that you inform your doctor about any past or current medical conditions you have.

Treatment with 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors like finasteride has been associated with a slightly increased risk of developing high-grade, more aggressive prostate cancers. Discuss this risk with your doctor and keep up with your routine appointments to help screen for this risk. As this medication can reduce Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) levels in the blood by approximately 50% after 6 months of treatment, your doctor will establish a baseline PSA and monitor the levels regularly. Any confirmed increase from the lowest PSA level while taking finasteride may be a sign of prostate cancer and must be evaluated, even if the PSA level is still within normal limits. While there is no significant risk of major drug interactions between finasteride and other medications, it is important to inform your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine if it is safe to use along with finasteride. Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and direct light, and keep away from children and pets.
