Prostigmin Information

Prostigmin (Neostigmine) is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor used to treat myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks its own muscle receptors, causing severe muscle weakness and easy fatigability. It helps to improve muscle strength, particularly for chewing, swallowing, and breathing in patients living with this neuromuscular condition.

Neostigmine works by temporarily inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down the chemical messenger acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. By binding to this enzyme and suppressing its effects, neostigmine allows acetylcholine to accumulate and remain active for a longer period. Prostigmin Side Effects

On the other hand, some antibiotics, such as gentamicin and amikacin, can antagonize the therapeutic effects of neostigmine, worsening muscle weakness in individuals with myasthenia gravis. Therefore, it is crucial to discuss with your doctor all current medications you are taking, including herbal supplements, to determine potential interactions with neostigmine.

Consult your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy; it should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus, as comprehensive data in pregnant women is limited. Also, do not use this medication while breastfeeding unless recommended by your doctor, as it can pass through breastmilk and possibly harm the breastfed infant.
