Qualaquin Information:
Qualaquin (Quinine sulfate) is a medication used to treat uncomplicated malaria. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver. This medication is used to kill the malaria parasites living inside red blood cells. This medication may also sometimes be prescribed by doctors to treat leg cramps. Qualaquin will not treat severe forms of malaria, and should not be used to prevent malaria. Qualaquin is effective due to its toxicity to the malarial pathogen. It works by interfering with the parasite’s ability to attack the blood in the body.
Qualaquin Precautions:
You should not use Qualaquin if you have long QT syndrome, myasthenia gravis, or optic neuritis. Tell your doctor if you have heart disease or a heart rhythm disorder, low levels of platelets in your blood, low potassium levels, or liver or kidney disease. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding a baby, to talk about any possible risks. Tell your doctor about any other medications you are currently taking in order to reduce the risk of interactions. If you notice any signs of low blood sugar, liver problems, or kidney problems, contact your doctor immediately. If you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
