Reclast Information

Reclast (Zoledronic Acid) is a third-generation, nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate used to treat and prevent several metabolic bone disorders. It is typically used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis in women and osteoporosis in men, both of which are conditions where bones become weak, porous, and highly susceptible to fractures. It is also used to prevent and treat glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, which is bone loss caused by long-term use of steroid medications like prednisolone. It is also used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women with low bone mass who have not yet developed full-blown osteoporosis. Furthermore, it may be used to treat Paget's disease of the bone, a disorder in which the normal cycle of bone renewal is disrupted, causing the body to build new bone that is fragile and often deformed.

Reclast works by binding directly to the mineral components of bone, concentrating heavily at sites of bone breakdown. When bone-resorbing cells called osteoclasts attempt to dissolve bone, they take up this medication. Inside these cells, the active ingredient, zoledronic acid, blocks a vital internal enzyme called farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase. Blocking this enzyme disrupts the internal structural proteins that osteoclasts need to survive and function. As a result, these bone-dissolving cells lose their ability to attach to the bone surface, fail to secrete bone-breaking acids, and ultimately undergo programmed cell death. Suppressing this excessive breakdown helps slow the rate of bone loss, allowing bone-building cells to catch up, rebuild bone density, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis and associated fractures.

Reclast Side Effects

Like other medications in its drug class, zoledronic acid can cause some side effects. Common side effects of this medication include bone or joint pain, drowsiness, eye redness or excessive tearing, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, redness or swelling at the infusion site, sleepiness, thirst, and vomiting. Contact your doctor if these mild side effects persist or worsen.

It is important to consult your doctor right away if you notice serious side effects such as:
• Atypical thigh bone fracture with symptoms such as new or unusual pain in the hip, groin, or thigh;
• Jaw problems such as numbness or feeling of heaviness in the jaw, poor healing of the gums, loose teeth, exposed bone in the mouth, swelling or gum infections, bad breath, or pain in the mouth, teeth, or jaw;
• Kidney disease, symptoms such as change in urine color, reduced urination, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hiccups, loss of appetite;
• Low blood calcium levels, with symptoms such as numbness, tingling in the extremities, or muscle spasms;
• Severe or persistent bone, joint, and/or muscle pain;

Also, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as breathing difficulties, rash, body itching, hives, blistering of the skin, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat. Be sure to inform your doctor about any other side effects you notice that are not listed here.

Reclast Precautions

Do not use this medication if you have:
• Allergy to zoledronic acid, or any of the other ingredients in Reclast;
• Low levels of calcium in the blood;
• Severe Kidney disease

Before using this medication, it is imperative to inform your doctor about any medical conditions you previously or currently have, including the following:
• Asthma, particularly from taking aspirin;
• Dental problems, including a planned dental procedure;
• Malabsorption syndrome or difficulty with digestion;
• Past history of low blood calcium;
• Past history of parathyroid or thyroid surgery

Using this medication alongside nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like high-dose ibuprofen, certain antibiotics like aminoglycosides, or specific antiviral treatments can significantly increase the risk of acute kidney injury. Also, some diuretics (water pills), such as loop diuretics, can cause dehydration and further reduce the levels of calcium in the blood when used alongside zoledronic acid. Therefore, before using this medication, inform your doctor of any other medications you are currently taking, including herbal medicines and supplements, to determine whether it is safe to use with Reclast.

Reclast is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy due to a clear risk of harm to the fetus, including bone malformations and low birth weight. Also, zoledronic acid binds tightly to the skeleton for years and could theoretically be released during gestational bone remodeling and expose the fetus long after the last infusion. Maternal complications, such as prolonged labor linked to severe drops in calcium, have also been documented in animal studies. Also, this medication is not recommended in breastfeeding women because it is entirely unknown whether the drug passes into human breast milk. Due to the high potency of the active ingredient and the risk of permanently disrupting an infant's bone development, breastfeeding must be stopped if a mother requires this therapy.

This medication is typically administered via intravenous infusion by a doctor or qualified healthcare provider. Your doctor will tell you how often you will receive Reclast. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
